Advice for installing garden room for teen hangout

23 replies

Melonlover80 · 27/12/2020 17:37

My parents built my siblings and I a teen hangout
It was amazing for us, brilliant for my parents and also... family relations!

Fond memories of being in there with a couple of friends playing music and chatting freely with the wind howling outside. It was small but it was so cosy - we had a single sofa bed In there, couple of bean bags, a small fridge and cupboard and a Hifi (the nineties!). And my parents had the comfort of knowing we were around BUT not causing mess or noise inside. It really was a win win.

So... my children. Less privileged! We live in a flat with an enormous garden however. And i would like to do this. My boy, currently 11, is going to be broad and tall like all males on both his father and my side, and the interior of this flat just won’t be an appealing space for him to bring back friends and would intrude too much on me (and his sister!), and for my daughter - she has a small room, and I’d like her to be able to have more than one friend over and not feel like on top of one another.

So a garden room. I’d like it with electricity obviously, heating (this could be with fancy heaters presumably) and needless to say - very well insulated and robust. Perhaps 3.5m by 2.5 meters

It’s impossible to really get an idea of cost. I’m vaguely budgeting for £20k including groundwork (but excluding interior decoration such as flooring and heaters)

Is this reasonable?
Any advice?
Any recommendations?

Many thanks

I used AMC Garden rooms to build mine 5m X 4m. The prices vary depending on what you want.

I was talking to someone today about this very thing
They had built a garden room fir their son to use - fully insulated, electric, sleeping , living space. Quote was around £50k but they put it up themselves and it came in at around 30K

Would you recommend?

How much did you pay and what was included?

Huge thanks

@Melonlover80 As you see, the options are a lot and you'll get confused.

I started we Green Retreat because of the huge popularity and reviews but the waiting list was until May 2021 when I contacted then in August this year.

I contacted few others but their also had waiting list.

Then I came across AMC Garden Room and they agreed to build a garden room in October. I paid £25, 725 for 5m X 4m with extra height as the standard height of all the garden rooms is 2.5m. I needed the extra height because I'm using it as a gym and didn't want to be restricted by internal height of 2.0 to 2.1m.

Also, including in the price was Canadian Cedar panel, Base installation, electricity, 7 internal bulbs, 2 external lights, internet, flooring 10 wall sockets and so on

Sorry £24,725

Melonlover80 · 28/12/2020 09:48

@chukwe. So helpful

I’m going to contact them

Thank you

@Melonlover80

How sound proofed is yours?
I don't know as the building is at the back of my garden around 25m away from my house. I only have a tv and gym equipments in there. www.amcgardenrooms.co.uk/

Last question
What do you do for heating?

OP posts:
ChristopherTracy · 28/12/2020 10:44

We have one like the one above but without any wood cladding and the sound proofing is much better than the house so we have a sound system in there. Ours didnt need foundations or a base - they level it as they build it ifyswim. So its much quicker - we were inside it on the second day!

@Melonlover80

Last question What do you do for heating?
I installed a Samsung Split Unit Air Conditioning which serves for both cooling and heating. I use the cooling while working out on the Treadmill and heating when I'm relaxing. AMC gave me a free oil-filled radiator which I don't use. I also bought a Meaco Dehumidifier to keep the humidity low.

Mine was took around 5 weeks to build from start to finish

chukwe · 28/12/2020 11:10

@Melonlover80 I have noticed that AMC has increased their prices on the website. My buillding was the cheapest at that time in September compared to any building of my size & features from other companies

goodbyestranger · 28/12/2020 11:22

I built exactly what you describe including foundations and a slate roof also internet and phone connections for around £20k a few years ago. It's as soundproof as anything with double glazed windows and doors is going to be.

goodbyestranger · 28/12/2020 11:23

Our heating is a panel radiator which is extremely effective. The shed is super cosy even on the coldest of days.

Melonlover80 · 28/12/2020 11:32

@goodbyestranger. What size pls?

All so helpful. Getting excited!

3.6 x 2.8

ChristopherTracy · 28/12/2020 20:25

I have just a plug in tiny oil filled thing in mine on a timer. It takes an hour and the whole place is toasty.

Melonlover80 · 29/12/2020 09:54

@goodbyestrangerehst do you use yours for? Mine would be about that size

@goodbyestranger

what

OP posts:

OP I have eight DC all close in age, sharing bedrooms and so the studio was intended to be a place where the ones doing public exams could escape from the fray and get some quiet. It's down the end of the garden nestled into the vegetable patch. Now it's used as a place to wfh and also has two beds in (2' 6") so that when all eight are home they all have a bed to sleep in. Also useful when they bring a gf/ bf home.
