Bath taps - side or one end?

dizzyupthegirl86 · 26/12/2020 13:17

I feel like there’s something I’m missing when it comes to choosing a bath.
I am having a shower at one end - does the tap need to be at the same end? Or can I have one in the middle (for ease of washing the dog and just all round preference)? Are the ones that fill from the overflow any good, or just an overrated trend?

Having a post Christmas brain fog, apologies if it’s really obvious!

I have the shower at the end but the bath taps in the middle. Works grand.

Umbridge34 · 26/12/2020 13:19

I got rid of a bath with middle taps. If you like to top up when your in the bath it burns your thighs. At least if there on one end you can stick your feet out whilst running the hot tap.

Muffinbutton · 26/12/2020 13:20

Our plumber warned us off middle taps as ours would have been next to an outside wall and therefore hard to access if there were any issues.

Passmeabottlemrjones · 26/12/2020 13:20

On our bath, we have an overflow filler thingy up one end, and then a three way push button thing on the wall in the middle of the bath to control bath taps/showers, temperature etc - that way you can control what you want both when sat in the bath and whilst having a shower. It works quite well for us.

Snoozinandlosin · 26/12/2020 14:03

We have an overflow filler on the side nearest you when you walk in, I.e. not wall side. I was sold on this when we inherited one in our last flat and it made such a difference when cleaning because (hard) water doesn’t pool around the tap. As soon as we updated our bathroom in our new house we opted for this. The controls, like @Passmeabottlemrjones, are on the opposite wall and we have a shower at the head of the bath too.

bouncydog · 26/12/2020 14:04

We have a double ended bath and the filler is in the middle on one side. It also controls the plug. There is a lever on the wall at one end high enough up so that anyone sitting at that end can’t bang there head on it. Works well but if ever there was an issue with it, access to repair would be complicated.

Ah these are brilliant points - a friend of mine has pointed out that if I get a bath designed for a tap in the middle, either end will usually be sloped so not ideal for showers.

I know the feeling of having hot water on one thigh, @Umbridge34 ! But that seems a small price to pay for ease of cleaning and washing the dog

It’s quite a tight space, so if I have a tap under the shower then I need a bifolding shower screen so I can fold it back to access it as there’s no room to pull a solid one back from the bath - I’d rather have a solid one given the choice, again for ease of cleaning!

Whether it goes on the end or the middle, it’s on an outside wall either way but that’s a really good point!

We had a normal bath with a slope at just one end, with taps in the middle. They can put the taps where you want.

It’s still better for two to sit in than taps at one end.

We currently have overflow tap under the shower end and a control for both tap and shower at the other end. Works well.

We have the taps in the middle at the side, no problems with burning my legs as we have a long wide bath and the taps are by my knees which aren't under the tap. Plus I can reach them with my foot to turn them on, if they were at the end I wouldn't be able to reach.

PurpleDandelions · 26/12/2020 15:02

Taps at the end. Ideally ones you can operate with your feet so you can top up without moving and without scalding yourself.

dementedpixie · 26/12/2020 15:04

My taps are in the middle and the bath has steep sides as we have a shower over it

Surely if they're in the middle you can just turn them with your hands? No feet necessary.

I'd love a bath that I couldnt reach the end of with my feet... I'm 5ft10 though so that ain't happening ever.

BackforGood · 26/12/2020 15:08

Misses point, but, if you are washing the dog in a bath with a shower over it, why wouldn't you use the showerhead to wash him ?

our bath with middle taps has the shower at the end and its fine.

I could but if I'm lying back reading then I can do it with my foot and not have to stop reading Grin

I could touch the end of ours but it's long enough that I don't have to, I'm only a little bit shorter than you. Our bath is just over 6 foot long.

bouncydog · 26/12/2020 18:15

Our bath is over 6’ long and as I’m only just over 5’ I can’t lie down if there’s too much water in it as I float!!

She hates baths so I have to use the handheld bit for it - but if I have a solid screen, it’s going to be a bit unwieldy as the screen can only be pushed forward over the bath rather than pulled behind it, so the handheld shower wouldn’t be that easy to reach. If I have a tap in the middle then I can have a handheld shower doofrey incorporated into that (not sure what technical term is, brain has turned to mush).

roastedpudding · 26/12/2020 18:55

We have the handheld shower thing as well as the overhead shower with two shower heads, it's so useful for cleaning the bath.

BackforGood · 26/12/2020 19:46

Aha!
Thank you @dizzyupthegirl86, and I know exactly what a handheld shower doofrey is Grin
