Character or modern style?

Hi all, viewed these two places a while back, one modern and the other period style, both are sold now, but still interested to know which of the two you prefer and why:

Can't really tell without a floor plan. Decor of either could be made more interesting with better use of colour.
The older house has been extended with a giant modern kitchen but I don't think they have used the space well, two big downstairs rooms lost to "hallway". No seating/sofa in the kitchen. Only one bathroom upstairs which is fair enough but unusual at this price. I would try and look past the theme to what space you get for your money.

Number two definitely, It’s detached ( big plus ) and number 1 looks like it would need a lot of work to make nice , if you zoom in on some of the photos it’s a bit minging. Looks like a bit of damp on the blue wall at the bottom of the stairs ? And why would anyone list a house for sale with a wall in the state that it’s in ( next to open fireplace ). Some people 🙄🤣

No 2 for me. Light, airy and easy to maintain are more important now than when we bought our first, or even last, house.

I love a character property (I live in an early 1800s cottage), but I actually prefer the second. The first one has some character, but it's difficult to pinpoint exactly where in history it belongs. I don't think it's been refurbished particularly sensitively when it's had work done, and it feels a bit mismatchy. The second house owns what it is, and does so well. You can easily make it more homely.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 27/12/2020 11:16

I prefer 1 but the garden in 2 is better (because it seems bigger).

Undervaluedandsad · 27/12/2020 11:20

Modern, without any shadow of a doubt.

Namechange2020lalala · 27/12/2020 14:31

Both are actually lovely

OneKeyAtATime · 27/12/2020 23:00

I prefer the second one

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 27/12/2020 23:36

Second one, It’s detached in its own plot and has some stature about it, the bones of a lovely house are there it’s just that the current owners have very bland uninspiring taste hence it looking soulless, it needs someone with a good eye to add character through through decor and furnishings, it could look beautiful and the garden is big and could be lovely once established. The older one is not what I would describe as a particularly characterful, if I was going for a character house it would have to be a proper chocolate box cottage or a grand Victorian type house.

Much preferred the first.

Could not believe how expensive they were!

Sickoffamilydrama · 28/12/2020 09:18

I live in Oxfordshire and Boarshill whilst very £££ with some house that have amazing views that is it, it offers nothing else. Haven't driven that way in a while but think the shop they had is gone so you'd have to fight traffic to just get some milk.

Witney is a lovely Market town with huge amounts on, we have friends that live there and it's great. We have considered moving there but I travel to Manchester pre-covid a lot so it's to far from motorways/rail links for me although we still considered it for all the amenities it has.

alltheadrenalin · 28/12/2020 09:19

I love the first one, I'm not a lover of modern/new builds

Hello, We have been searching a house for a long time. We found a house recently put an offer on it and was accepted. Now when we are in the middle of processing’s, I realised that the ceiling height was quite low in the whole house 2.1meter. I am so stressed because I am thinking low ceiling heights are not most desirable and it won’t look good no matter how much we spend on house in renovation. Any advice please??

gettingolderbutcooler · 28/12/2020 19:54

1st one. Character. Lovely indoor/outdoor space.

SacreBleeeurgh · 28/12/2020 20:14

@Maimoona might want to start your own thread for best advice 😊

Maimoona · 28/12/2020 20:37

Alright. Thanks

Evecob · 28/12/2020 20:39

definitely number 2.

Bouledeneige · 28/12/2020 20:47

Just going on look and feel I'd go with the first. Character every time. Even though I don't like the decor. The second one has no personality at all.

I've done a lot of viewings this year. I live in an Edwardian house which needs a brush up and loved the thought of something brand new. But I viewed loads and in the end its age and character that I love. They just have a feel of comfort, features and home. I love interiors with character and features and a combination of vintage and modern interiors with lots of texture, pattern an colour. The second is a very bland box.

But OP its down to you. You need to view and get the feel of what you want to live in.
