and did you start the sales process straight away or hold off until you found a house. If we start the process now will the purchase likely catch up so we can complete at the same time to avoid rental costs and moving twice etc

A few weeks for us. However we had already viewed a lot of houses so we had a good idea of what we wanted, there was also a lot coming onto the market. We also missed out on a house we liked after an offer had been accepted on ours, so when we saw this one we offered asking price straight off and offer was accepted.

Yes we instructed a solicitor straight away re sale, our estate agents needed their details. Things have indeed caught up and we're now ready with both our sale and purchase, however the bloke we're purchasing from is now holding up the chain with his onward purchase, so we're in an annoying waiting limbo.

We found a house we were prepared to offer on very quickly, but missed out on it to someone in a better position. Eventually had an offer accepted 6 weeks/4 houses later.

Our buyer didn't want to start the process until the chain was complete, but when it became apparent that that wasn't going to happen quickly, we agreed to go into rented rather than risk the sale falling through.

As to whether the purchase will catch up - it depends on the approach that everyone wants to take. I've always progressed both the mortgage and the conveyancing in parallel - but with all the uncertainty at the moment, I've read on here that a lot of people are waiting til they have an approved mortgage before beginning the legal side. If your buyer takes that approach and you and your vendor don't, yes - you could catch up. But equally, your buyer could do both in parallel and then your vendor wants to do it sequentially.

We’d already found our house. Although we did look at a couple more after we accepted an offer. Luckily, estate agents in our area continued to allow house viewings once yours was on the market & we didn’t have to wait to have sold..

Within a week, and yes, we'd decided we would go into rented as we said we'd sell come what May as it took us a while to find a buyer so started straight away.

It only took us just over two weeks. But we had a certain number of requirements (detached, at least two bathrooms, at least 3 bedrooms) and a certain area we were looking in. There were about 12 houses that fit the bill and I was able to get appointments to view them all within 2 weeks. It was a frantic time, normally with a couple of viewings a day. We actually fell in love with the first one we saw, but then couldn’t agree a price. Having a set pool to choose from, we then thought practically about which of the other houses suited us the most. Thankfully when we went back for a second viewing on the “best of the bunch” we realised that we could love it too.
