Boiler repair tmrw - just been told child needs to isolate

I’ve trawled advice across the net but can’t find answer. Our boiler has been on the blink for some time and is due to be fixed tomorrow. Have just received a phone call to tel me that my child has been in touch with someone who has tested positive and must isolate until 26th. Can boiler repair still happen? Maybe If I keep child in our garden office and have all windows open? Perhaps wishful thinking. :-(

I think you need to speak to whoever is carrying out the repair to see what the options are

MrsDeadlock · 20/12/2020 18:31

Yes as long as child is kept away from the boiler repair person. In another room.

If child becomes symptomatic then no.

Office sounds ideal but it’s up to the boiler man. Phone them and ask.

I think from memory when we had our boiler fixed earlier in the year, you had to let them know asap before the appt if someone in the house had been told to isolate. However being told to isolate is obviously not the same thing as being symptomatic or having a positive test, I think the company need to know so the engineer can be warned and take extra predications (or if they are uncomfortable with the risk, pass it to another engineer).
Fingers crossed you get it fixed, it was bad enough being without hot water and hearing in October, let alone this time of year!

I believe, as a close contact and presumably not ill, only the child has to isolate and the rest of you can continue on as normal? (Unless they become ill of course). So I'd imagine a thoroughly ventilated house and child elsewhere should be ok?

Ludlar · 20/12/2020 18:36

Thanks folks - I can’t reach them just now but will call first thing. Was planning for everyone to be out of the house anyway but just want to be sure. Just in panic mode

From what I saw online you are supposed to cancel if someone is isolating - we had the same child close contact and had to cancel plumber for leaking taps and electrician for broken light. Fairest thing is let them know and see what they say.

We had this. I couldn't find any advice other than if a person is self isolating then you are not allowed visitors.
I could not find an emergency exception rule. My child has been on back to back isolations.
We were without hot water and heating (this was three weeks ago) and sat it out in the cold to the end of the isolation. Not fun.

This is not correct.
HoneysuckIejasmine · 22/12/2020 10:15

Is it not? My friends child is currently isolating as a close contact (positive case in class) but they've been told the requirement to isolate doesn't extend to the rest of his household (i.e. Mum, Dad, Little brother). Maybe it's because they live in Wales, maybe the rules are different?

halcyondays · 22/12/2020 10:22

The rest of the household don’t have to isolate unless the isolater develops symptoms but they should distance from the them as much as possible. You can’t have visitors to your home except for essential care, according to the NHS website.

middleager · 22/12/2020 10:27

The post was incorrect in terms of having people in your house. You can't simply put the positive case in another room, ventilate the home and welcome in visitors (except for essential care as highlighted above) as suggested, but the non positive contacts can go out and to work as usual etc.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 22/12/2020 10:38

Ah ok, thank you.

irisetta · 22/12/2020 13:38

I'd say having a working boiler in the middle of winter is pretty essential! Are you completely without heat and hot water OP?
