Should I destroy old mortgage documents?

Sold my old flat and now got a new house. I have many years worth of mortgage statements in a folder. Do I need to keep them for some reason or can I just shred everything?

Thanks.

I tend to keep documents like this for about 6 years after the sale (I vaguely remember reading that number somewhere and its clearly stuck!). However, its sounds like I might be being over cautious, according to this website you can shred them once you no longer own the property:

I would definitely keep a few key ones - like first and last, any major payments etc. I would not be comfortable shredding them all.

Was glad I kept mine dating back 30 years.

They helped me win a £10k PPI claim.

The Building Society were stunned when I presented my statements as evidence to the Ombudsmen !!

When I moved house I kept anything related to the previous property. Then when I moved again I filtered out anything relating to the first property.

As mentioned 6 years is a good timeframe and if anything turned legal there are statutes of limitations in place. Finally, property in the UK is 'sold as seen' which basically means you have no redress over the previous occupier and vice versa.

That's unanimous then, ok I'll find somewhere safe to keep them. Thanks

Shred them! The company keeps them for 6 years and is legally required to do so!

I scanned ours and saved them onto a memory stick, then shredded the old ones
