Looking for advice on moving to Bucks / Herts -anywhere we’ve missed?

My partner and I are looking for somewhere to relocate to next year with our one-year-old son. The brief is that we need to be within 20 mins of Harefield (my parents are there and care for our son once per week), looking for a village-y feel, not too isolated, nursery, and ideally primary school, within walking distance. We are both secondary teachers so would be looking to move jobs too but happy to commute.
So far we have liked Sarratt (Herts), Seer Green and Jordans (Bucks) but all three areas have very few properties available in our price bracket (up to £700k). We have discounted Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Chalfont St Peter (for various reasons of being to busy or just not having the feel that we’re after) and Harefield (for being too close to my parents!). We quite like Chalfont St Giles but haven’t seen anything there we like. Is there anywhere else we’ve missed in terms of areas that would fit the bill? Thanks in advance for any advice.

You are being super picky regarding your budget I’m afraid. Jordans is very expensive. You are a bit dismissive of The Chalfonts. You could look at Chesham Bois but it’s further away. Villages are all very expensive! You could look at Little Missenden, Great Missenden, Winchmore Hill, Penn and Penn Street, but they are all a bit further out. There’s also Little and Great Kingshill and The Lee.

Winch moor Hill or coleshill. Lots of schools in Amersham/ high Wycombe/ beaconsfield.

Do your parents have to look after your son one day a week? It seems crazy to restrict your search so much based on that. Before you know it he will be off to school anyway.

There’s also Chenies, Flaunden and Latimer. You could consider Fulmer near Gerrards Cross. There are also hilltop villages in the Chilterns such as Hawridge and Cholesbury. Plus a few more with good village community spirit near Wendover.

Croxley Green is in between Rickmansworth and Watford but is a village and has a village feel. Friends live there and love it.

Good point! I should have been a bit clearer, as a family we are close to my parents and they are very keen to be involved in childcare. At the moment they look after him once per week but once my mum retires next year this is likely to increase. I also like being in close proximity to my family, having lived far away for a number of years in the past.

Wondering if you found something suitable @WLondon30something

WLondon30something · 10/04/2023 17:13

Yes, we did. We initially had an offer accepted on a property in Seer Green but it turned out that the vendors weren't actually ready to sell and we spent a few months waiting on them, during which time we found a lovely place in Chalfont St Peter. We have been very happy with the move and love the area.

Good for you. It’s a wonderful place to raise a family.
