Where is this smell coming from!?

So last night i noticed this horrible eggy/pooey smell in my house it sort of smells like when your baby has done a poo and you change their nappy and the smell is still in the air after if that makes sense?

Ive literally looked everywhere for where this smell is coming from including: the sink, bin, fridge under all the sofas/beds/rugs, inside all the cupboards, wardrobes and the bathroom but the smell just will not go at all! Im starting to worry it's something in the walls or under the floor or somewhere inaccessible. Does anyone else know what would cause this smell? Its driving me up the wall and have no idea how to check where its coming from and its really noticeable. Its only me and my 3 year old in the house but my mum commented on it straight away when she came round today Blush

Have you looked behind all the radiators? I had a really bad smell in the house I couldn't get rid of and it turned out ds has been stuffing things down the back of radiators 🤢.

We had this recently. It was strongest near the front door so it took us a while to find it. It turned out to be a toilet in the en suite guest room (so rarely used). The water had drained from the u bend so the sewer smells were coming into the house 🤮. But it was weird because the smell was strongest several rooms away.

I once had an awful eggy smell in my front room. It was the fireplace leaking water which had obviously gone rancid. It was a very strong rotten egg smell. Got a water leak anywhere?

Have you sniffed your oven gloves or mitts? Sounds odd but we had some that reeked of dead animal after they were washed.

@Weirdfan

Yes Jemima! I had a package from Amazon the other day and the brown paper they'd stuffed it with absolutely stunk, weird Confused
God yes. That paper they use smells rancid! Glad I'm not the only one to notice it.

9/10 times on these threads it’s the light fittings. Sniff where the lightbulb slots into the fitting. Does it get whiffier after they’ve been switched on for a while?

Rotting foodstuff down side of sofa or armchair cushions?

Its the milk.

We had an artificial Christmas tree that had fake (obviously) snow. First year was fine, second year tree smelt a bit odd, third year had to stand it outside for a couple of days and then spay with Fabreeze. Four the smell was so horrible we had to throw it away.
It turned out it was the 'fake snow' that caused the awful smell.

Thank you everyone! I returned home last night after staying at my mums (she's part of my support bubble because I have a disability and she takes me to work in the morning) and when we got back we had a good sniff off all the rooms and agreed it was definitely in the lounge!

Anyway she left to go home and I sat down on the floor to finish wrapping presents to send today. I was sat in the same spot for about an hour without moving and thought Christ I really do smell I should have a shower before bed. Then I had a lightbulb moment, I smelt the spot Id be sitting in (yes still weird I know) and OMG it was absolutely disgusting honestly it really smelt like mouldy horrible gross milk with a whiff of carpet cleaner sprayed on top to mask the smell!

So for all who said milk well done Grin. I knew DS had spilt milk a while back but I cleaned it and because i couldn't see the stain I assumed all was fine. I still haven't sorted it properly I think I'll wait until hes in bed!

With a 3 year old milk obsessed toddler who was bottle fed as a baby I should have known alot better!

Sorry for the essay

Hire a rug doctor and shampoo your carpets. It is like using a heavy vacuum cleaner, not difficult (depending on your disability) and the results are amazing. I used to hire it for two days and share with a friend to make it cheaper, I collect and do one day, friend has it for second day and returns. Turn the heating up for an hour and it's dry enough to use the room again.

Heavy to pick up btw, not really heavy to push around.
