Issue with hob been placed hard against splashback

We are in the process of getting a kitchen installed. The fitter was unable to get the hob any further forward due to the hob and oven not being compatible with Zenith thin solid laminate worktop. We have contacted Homebase where we purchased it and they have suggested we place a heat resistant glass or steel panel above hob as a precaution. However we are not happy as there is no clearance between the hob and splashback and doesn’t meet regulations. On the zenith website it states that the worktop is compatible with all single ovens and hobs. I wondered if anyone else has had similar issues and where to go from here. I have attached some pics

Although the zenith work top website states any single oven or hob are compatible so it’s all very misleading

OP’s worktop is a 12.5mm Zenith so it’s impossible to install the hob in that worktop. The kitchen designer should have checked this and shouldn’t have sold those two products as compatible.

How is this even possible? I thought all worktops were either 20 or 30mm? I couldn't imagine a worktop with a thickness of 12.5mm.... Mine is 20mm as I prefer the slimline look, but any slimmer and it would look ridiculous.

I think your fitter has totally cocked up. We have a 12.5mm worktop with a hob that says compatible with 20-60mm worktops. I think most of them say this, the ultra thin worktops are quite recent.

From our installation, the part that could have caused a problem was the clips to attach the hob to the worktop. We got around that by fitting additional wooden batons to the underside to make sure it was secure.

It sounds like human error to me rather than basic incompatibility. I hope you can get something sorted out.

That’s interesting.. so there may be a way of getting it to fit? Can you explain a bit more about this. Where were the wooden batons placed exactly? Anything worth a shot at this stage!!!

There may be. Ours is induction rather than gas though so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

Our worktop was pre cut so the idea being the hob just slots in. Underneath you have the fittings which clamp the hob to the worktop which will be loose on a 12.5mm worktop. We screwed the batons to the worktop but no more nails would probably be fine. You’re just using these to increase the depth, the fittings will cause a clamp effect and they’ll be secure.

We fitted our kitchen ourselves but our electrician confirmed it was perfectly safe and it’s solid.

Good luck!

Ah I see, this may not work for ours as I think induction jobs are slimmer, will ask the joiner however.. I’ve sent out a detailed email to the kitchen company with the issues and hopefully I can get this resolved quickly

Just a thought OP, did you take out finance when purchasing your kitchen? If you did, the finance company will help you come to a resolution with the company you purchased your kitchen from. If you can’t resolve it directly with them. I hope you get it sorted out, good luck.

Pandora2011 · 14/12/2020 18:05

Managed to get it sorted out today. The zenith worktop was not compatible with a single oven and should not have been sold as part of a plan. The store will reimburse for new worktop sourced from somewhere else and arriving in a couple of days and the fitters have agreed to refit. Thank god it’s all been sorted out 😀

That’s great news Op, I am pleased it’s being sorted out & so they should, it’s stressful enough having a kitchen installed as it is.

BarryTheChopper · 14/12/2020 22:06

Great news, I’m really pleased for you.

murbblurb · 15/12/2020 10:56

great stuff. Stand over the fitters and make damn sure there is sufficient space left. They should have spotted the problem before fitting and alerted you.

Pandora2011 · 15/12/2020 17:00

Apparently they did spot the problem before fitting but were conscious of the time scale they had and decided to just work with the materials as best as they could 🙄
