Any accidental landlords around? Small 1 bed flat.

I'm in a real quandary about whether or not to become an accidental landlord, renting out a 1 bed flat. I've heard so many horror stories, but surely there must be an upside somewhere? I have no intention of becoming a property mogul so it would only ever be my little flat.

Anyone with good experience or any tips? I need to make up my mind and stop sitting on the fence.

Hello everyone,

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everybody who has contributed to the thread. So many experiences and sharing of information - MN is such a great place to 'put it out there' and ask for input.

You are all brilliant and I am so grateful for all the advice and honesty.

As a result, I have decided not to go ahead with the incompetent accidental landlord situation. Big decision, but I think the right decision, which was taken "in conference" with the community here.

Thank you again so much. I wish we were all in a pub and I could buy us all a massive round and unlimited crisps/snacks/pigs in blankets/vegi alternatives.

So grateful. x

I think that’s a shame. I’ve been an accidental landlord for 10 years. Partly I like the fact I have an asset that is mine, it’s appreciated in value over ten years. I haven’t just broken even . It’s done well despite re roofing, various repairs . If I’d sold 10 years ago...I would possibly have frittered the money.

4 tenants. I found them all myself. I manage it myself.

Ohhh. I will have salt n vinegar and one of those new posh real lemonades as dont drink...i still think you should give it a go...maybe not make much capital on the place but if you get good tenants then its a nice reliable income each month despite the paperwork....it really only takes me a few days to sort each year....your decision tho...!!
