£200 for a washing machine?

EdgeOfACoin · 07/12/2020 19:49

DH and I are in the process of buying a new home. The sellers have said they will leave their washing machine for £200, which we think is a lot for a second hand washing machine.

Things to bear in mind are that we are planning to re-do the kitchen when we move in anyway, so we don't plan to keep it for long.

Secondly, the kitchen is in quite an awkward place and the washing machine would have to be manoeuvred down some awkward stairs. This means it will be a pain for us to get another washing machine down there but also awkward for the sellers to get theirs out.

Is £200 a lot for a second hand machine or are our expectations unrealistic?

Depends on what machine it is to be honest. Our washing machine was £160 new , it's a basic currys model.

BikeRunSki · 07/12/2020 19:52

Well, it’s a lot for an old Beko, it’s cheap for a new Miele.

Unless it’s fairly new and a decent brand, then I’d probably decline their offer.

Smallgoon · 07/12/2020 19:52

Have they specified how old it is, and are they able to back this up with proof of purchase etc?

My washing machine cost £650 so if theirs wasn't too old, I'd certainly consider it. If it's quite old, I wouldn't bother and would rather purchase my own.

Finfintytint · 07/12/2020 19:52

Seems a lot of money unless it’s brand new and a good brand. I’d say no and ask them to remove it.

Smallgoon · 07/12/2020 19:52

*obviously you need know which brand/model it is too... Mine's an all-singing Samsung.

BikeRunSki · 07/12/2020 19:53

Although I guess it depends on how much you need the convenience of having the WM ready to go.

thecakebadge · 07/12/2020 20:01

The fact that the kitchen stairs are hard to negotiate shouldn’t play into it - if you say no then the sellers need to remove it when they move out so it’s their problem, not yours. Plus if you get a new one you will presumably get someone to deliver it, in which case it’s part of the job to put it in place (and they’ll fit it for about £30 too)

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/12/2020 20:02

My sellers left their reasonably new Samsung Ecobubble behind and I sold it on eBay for £260 so if it’s a decent make and new-ish, £200 sounds reasonable.

If it’s awkward to get it out they may end up leaving it anyway. My sellers tried to sell it to sell theirs to me on the fixtures form but I didn’t want it. They left it anyway because it was a pain to get it around the tight corners of the porch.

thecakebadge · 07/12/2020 20:03

Ps. Yes it’s a lot for a WM unless it’s a shiny brand and model and fairly new

Chronicallymothering · 07/12/2020 20:05

Check the brand but also take into account how much it might cost (in time, faffing and money) to have your plumbed in, if the fittings under the sink aren't quite right. I also think F&F forms are opening gambits, you can counter offer £100 if it's in their interests to keep it.

opinionatedfreak · 07/12/2020 20:06

What brand is it?

How old is it?

New Miele washing machines are over 1K....

MikeUniformMike · 07/12/2020 20:16

They are being CFs.

This is how we ended up with a massive table, and my friend ended up with a piano.

"They are being CFs."

How can you know this? Washing machines can be very expensive

SupaTrooper · 07/12/2020 20:37

Just say no and buy one. Then sell it when you've done your kitchen. You will have the receipt and the instructions then.

We did this recently and sold it for £40 less then we bought it for to a landlord.

It's a second-hand washing machine.
OP said it would need to be manoeuvred down some awkward stairs.
Chances are they will leave it behind.

If it was a nearly new Miele, not CFs, but you could get a new washing machine delivered and fitted for £200.

myhobbyisouting · 07/12/2020 21:15

"If it was a nearly new Miele, not CFs, but you could get a new washing machine delivered and fitted for £200."

If you're into false economies possibly 😂. I prefer my washing machines to last

Smallgoon · 07/12/2020 21:20

OP said it would need to be manoeuvred down some awkward stairs.

So? Removing appliances is 'always' awkward and best left to professionals. Removing furniture can be a PITA too, doesn't mean I'll be leaving mine behind!

Precisely. I wouldn't consider purchasing a new one for that price. You'd be hard pushed to find a decent WM for less than £500.
EdgeOfACoin · 07/12/2020 21:33

Thanks, there's been some really good advice on here.

The washing machine is Samsung (not sure of model) and I don't know how old. It sounds like I should ask for more details.

MrsTwitcher · 07/12/2020 21:36

It might not even work

Pootle40 · 07/12/2020 21:44

If it's one of the Samsung ones that allow you to add items mid wash they are not cheap

BammBamm · 07/12/2020 21:56

We had a Samsung addwash and I'm not surprised they want to leave it! The worst washing machine I've had by a mile. It didn't clean things properly and it leaked from the door from day 1. It had 3 replacements before I said no more and had to argue that yet another repair was pointless and was causing me too much disruption. They offered me a £10 voucher for 6 days of waiting in for engineer visitsEnvy and refused me another machine. The one I had before was a cheap hotpoint and I thought I'd upgraded. I needed a bigger one, but I wish I kept my old 5kg! The Samsung was awful and didn't make it a year in our house until it was replaced. It cost me £600ish and was a complete waste.

Smallgoon · 07/12/2020 22:24

I've got a Samsung ecobubble addwash and I think it's the best thing ever!

When we bought our house the vendors wanted £500 for the bespoke wine storage in the cellar, and a further £100 for a clapped out dishwasher. We knew we’d never use the wine racks - we are more ‘bottle of Lidl rosé in the fridge door’ than fancy wine cellar people. But we agreed to it because we were trying to keep them onside for a quick purchase, as our buyers were pushing for a completion date ASAP or they’d pull out, and we had a baby, toddler and pair of cats to accommodate, so a gap between sale and purchase was not practical.

The buggers reneged on the completion date anyway, as their chosen removals firm wasn’t available on the date we’d agreed. So we ended up spending two difficult weeks in a borrowed one bed flat anyway, our stuff had to go into storage, cats into a cattery, and I had to leave behind my beloved potted peach trees.

We’ve never used the wine storage and the dishwasher died within a month. I deeply regret that £600.
