Fridge location

Hi. I'm having a dilemma on where to locate a fridge freezer in an upcoming kitchen refurb. We have 2 options, firstly along a run of shallow depth tall cupboards where it will obviously stick out a lot further than the cupboards or in the utility room so there will be a sliding pocket door between it and the rest of the kitchen.
The first option worries me about looks and the second option worries me about accessibility, although we currently have our larder cupboard in the utility so we're used to using both rooms to access our food.
What are people's thoughts?
Thanks

Why are the tall cupboards shallow depth - couldn't you make them all deep and fully integrate the fridge?

It would irritate me to have it behind a door but I suppose if you're a very organised person - would you leave the milk out or go backwards and forwards for a cuppa? Could it go by the shallow units but at one end by a wall?

Would you be able to fit an undercounter fridge in the kitchen? And put the F/F in the utility?

Unfortunately not. I had wondered about that one myself.

It depends on how far the utility is. For me it would mean going back and forth 8-9 metres each way through 2 doors which would drive me mad when cooking.

You really need it in the kitchen

We have a second FF in the utility right next to the kitchen. It wouldn't be the end of the world if we only had that one. I frequently have to get stuff out and it's not a big deal. But the door to the utility is next to the kitchen ff so about 4 more steps....

if the tall fridge is at the end of the run, it will not look very unsightly.

but if your kitchen is for use, rather than ornament, the FF needs to be near your sink, cooker and worktop.

Yes agreed. The FF needs to be near the prep and cooking area. To and fro from a utility room is not a good idea. You cannot even make a cup of tea without going into another room!

Put the FF at the end of the run with the wall cupboards. Do you need this number of shallow cupboards? Who designed the kitchen? Seems a bit of an odd design to me.

Mine is in utility, just off kitchen, and it’s fine.

But why settle for “fine” when you could have something better? Put it at the end of the run of narrower units, or ditch one base unit and put an undercounted fridge in instead (and keep fridge/freezer in utility as “overspill” - undercounted for milk/fruit/ etc,). The aesthetics are less important than practicality!

Under counter can be ok in small households but capacity is hugely diminished and it’s not great for a family. Built in would look neater in this scenario. I have and end October run fridge freezer in my holiday house. Nothing else is that deep but it’s absolutely fine. Just looks integrated and smart.

We have fridge freezer in utility but it's right next to the wall and the sink is on the other side with the oven opposite so with the door open we still have a small work triangle. I think it just depends on the distance and access.

PresentingPercy · 07/12/2020 11:38

October! Not sure how that crept in! It’s an end of run built in fridge freezer. In the scenario you describe, this is a neater and the best solution. Then you have saved space in the utility for alternative storage.

Thanks all. I think the solution is to ensure there is a socket in both locations so if one doesn't work I can swap it around. The distance in our set up wouldn't be much different regardless of location. I think the solution is to move our current fridge into the utility room for a few weeks before we do the build and see how that works out. Thanks for the advice.
