What paint goes with these tiles?

Our bathroom is tired and in need of a revamp. It needs painting and new mirror/ bathroom cabinet. We are not in the market for replacing anything major but hoping a few hundred quid will smarten it up.

I have put a picture of part of the bathroom here. (Ignore the mess and the fact I have just run a bath!) There is also a separate shower cubicle with the same tiles. All the bathroom suite is white.

Anyway, as I have no natural sense of style I need advice on what colour paint will go with these tiles? I fancy something a bit different but think I am probably stuck with a pebble/ beige colour if we don’t want to replace the tiles?

Any ideas?

The exact paint we originally used is no longer available by the way.

Personally I would paint the tiles, then go for a colour you really want for the rest

Whatpaint · 04/12/2020 21:42

Thanks for the suggestion but we’d rather not paint the tiles.

Possibly light green, blue or even ( because I don't normally like it) yellow?

FamilyOfAliens · 04/12/2020 21:46

In think an ivory / cream type colour would look good with those tiles.

dylanthedragon · 04/12/2020 21:58

My first thought was navy walls but it would depend on how much light the room gets.

Lindy2 · 04/12/2020 22:05

I actually quite like your bathroom. To refresh and brighten it up though I'd go for white painted walls. I know it's a bit boring but it would provide a really good contrast between the white suite and beige tiles whilst being nice and light.

FromABook · 04/12/2020 22:05

I'd go with white (#boring), as it's clean and bright, then I'd go large with green plants, nice roller blind, nice accessories, picture of some kind, or something on the wall...

Or I'd go with something like F&B mizzle, which would go with the tiles and be a calming, clean colour.

FromABook · 04/12/2020 22:06

@Lindy2 cross posted with your great mind ;)

Lindy2 · 04/12/2020 22:08

New flooring would also refresh the room too. Perhaps a floor tile similar to the mosaic on the walls.

Lindy2 · 04/12/2020 22:10

FromABook sounds good Grin

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 04/12/2020 22:13

Agree with @FromABook. I think you need to accessorise it a bit and bring in a bit of colour with some plants. Also maybe some shelving above the sink for toothpaste etc.

If you’re planning to spend a few hundred pounds then all this should be very achievable. I think the trouble is the walls and the tiles blend into each other which personally I don’t think is a bad look at all as long as you have some other bits of interest like an unusual mirror etc

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/12/2020 22:17

What made me smile was the empty shelf & all the stuff around the sink! 🤣

When you're thinking about your new cabinet:mirror, think about how your family actually lives, not how you'd like them to live!!

Resistance is futile 🤣

Why not have a go at replacing the tiling yourselves? & can you replace the acrylic bath front?

If you can get rid of the tiles, the colour works us your oyster! Instead of being stuck with those tones.

If you're not up for that, then I think you need to pick a colour from the small tiles.

I love white, but I woukdnt paint white walls with those tiles.

jazzandh · 04/12/2020 22:20

Are they porcelanosa tiles...they look similar to ones we have in our cloakroom.

I picked out the darkest colour in the mosaic bit of the tile edging and painted the walls in that colour.

It makes the tiles lighter in contrast rather than darker - it depends if you like a darker more intense bathroom.

FromABook · 04/12/2020 22:25

White looks bright and fresh - though I still stand by my previous post and would say accessories are key. This picture looks a bit jewel-like, and a family bathroom could use more personality.

Agree with pp who suggested new floor tiles if in budget - that would also make a big difference.

FromABook · 04/12/2020 22:26

Hotel-like!! Not jewel-like...

TenShortStories · 04/12/2020 22:27

I agree with white. Anything too similar to the tile colour feels a bit oppressive and same-all-over, and anything too different (blue etc) just clashes. Maybe there's a good pale but similar colour, although I'd still go white I think. I'd maybe add a little corner shelf above the bath for a nice plant. Also - is your bath gold??

I can kind of see you in the reflection on the window. Just thought I'd mention in case you think anyone could recognise you and you'd rather they didn't.

2TheMoonNBack · 04/12/2020 22:41

I think that the photo above with the white walls, towels, etc is really lovely and agree that the flooring is probably where you'd get the most bang for your buck. I like the luxury hotel look so think this could look really smart.

However, I would also be tempted to put some colour on the walls - what about something like cuspian from Dulux? I think it might go really well with the warm colours of your tiles.

Whatpaint · 04/12/2020 23:37

Thank you all for al your comments. There are some great ideas there.

The bath is white. I don’t think it would be easy to replace the bath panel as it is an odd size/shape bath rather than standard and the bath is ten years old. I will look into it though.

I can’t remember where the tiles were from, again they are about ten years old. I just remember them being really expensive at the time!

We are no good at DIY and would rather not remove the tiles or replace them. Painting is really the limit!

In theory it is not the family bathroom, it is our en-suite but in reality it is used as the family bathroom as it has a nicer shower and bath than the family bathroom!

I think accessorising is a really good idea. And will definitely look at a new floor. It is vinyl there now, the floor underneath needs to be accessible so can’t do tiles on it. New vinyl would make a big difference.

I will look up the paint colours suggested in the morning. I like the idea or very pale but not white I don’t think.

Thank you all! Lots to think about.

Love the mizzle from F&B, different but would blend in. I am going to get a tester of that!

The dulux cuspian is lovely and very similar to the colour we initially painted the bathroom when we first had it done and really didn’t like it, it lasted about two days before the current colour went on! It is a lovely colour but really clashed with the tiles.

I may well look into flooring first and use that to guide me.

The budget isn’t strict, was just giving an idea that it is a revamp and freshen up rather than a total overhaul.

Thanks again all.

We have a dulux or crown colour in our dining room which is the cheap(er) version of mizzle, so worth getting a few tester pots in, in the closest shades, alongside the mizzle - would free up some budget for the floor too. F&B is beautiful paint, but sadly out of my reach, financially!

goldenharvest · 05/12/2020 09:07

I'd go a warm white and then a big splash of colour on a blind and towels. Any primary colour is good

NewlyGranny · 05/12/2020 09:19

At the moment, it's a bit like the inside of a biscuit tin, isn't it? You made a safe choice but you're bored now. It wants fresh and light, I think.

You could read the tiles as beach sand and go for pale aqua. You could go for a pure white and get interest from accessories. Or, and this is what I'd do, is go for a rich cream to give a warm freshness; a buttermilk or clotted cream colour that hints at yellow without going there, like an unfurling primrose.

I think you need tester pots and patches right next to those tiles.

PresentingPercy · 05/12/2020 09:29

I have Mizzle from F&B in a bathroom and I highly recommend it. It’s quite safe but reminds me of the sea in the uk!

For a white - try School Room White by F&B or Wimborne White. I also think a blue would look good. Borrowed Light is a great colour and De Nimes is a new smoky grey/blue that’s wonderful. That would be more of a statement colour but at least you would know you’ve made a change! Stunning with white towels! I think a good mirrored cupboard would help you make it look tidy and maybe a large mirror above the bath? This avoids a large expense of wall with no features.

Whatpaint · 05/12/2020 10:52

That’s hit the nail on the head exactly! We are by nature quite boring style wise as we don’t have any natural style flair so go safe. To be honest if the same paint was still made we would probably have just done another coat of it for ease. We are forced to change as it’s flaking in places and needs repairing.

Haven’t looked at the prices of paint, will see how much F&B is! Thankfully the budget is not strict so will go with whatever looks good.

Large mirror is a good idea but not one I will go with, I do not want to be confronted with a large image of my naked body!

I think lots of tester pots are the way to go but before this thread I didn’t even know what sort of tester pots to try! I now have some idea and will also look up some of the newer colour suggestions.

Thanks again!
