Separate shower or storage?

I'm getting quotes for a complete refit of my bathroom. I currently have a floor to ceiling cupboard (that used to house a hot water tank) so loads of storage for bedding, towels etc. it's too big really, I don't use it all.

Anyway, I've had it measured and there's room to take it out and put in a shower cubicle, so we'd have a bath and separate shower, there would be a sink vanity unit and wall cabinet so some storage but minimal (although probably as much as most bathrooms).

I have some health problems that make getting into the bath for a shower difficult some days, a separate shower would be amazing.

Is this a no brainier? I'm thinking about selling in the next 5 -10 years so I don't want to do anything that might put off buyers.

How much storage do you have other than this? I would definitely say a separate shower is an advantage but as long as there was sufficient storage elsewhere

fuzzymoon · 04/12/2020 18:00

Separate shower every time ! So much nicer regardless of how easily or not you can climb in the bath.

Gardenista · 04/12/2020 18:44

Shower for sure. A stand alone shower is more appealing to a buyer than a shower over a bath, both is ideal

Beebumble2 · 04/12/2020 18:53

I keep my linen in drawers on the landing, so I’d go for the separate shower cubicle.

I've got plenty of storage in my bedroom for bedding and extra towels. I'll definitely miss having space for big packs of toilet rolls, spare cleaning products etc. but I can make room in the pantry for some overflow storage.

Definitely have the shower. Make sure you get the tray installed as low as possible for easy access and non slip too.

HeddaGarbled · 05/12/2020 01:11

Definitely shower. We’ve bought a house with ludicrous amounts of storage in the bathroom but it’s mostly unused. I want my towels and bedding in the airing cupboard.

soschreibfaul · 05/12/2020 10:58

Definitely shower.

I bought a lovely long narrow cabinet for the bathroom, for toiletries and cleaning products.

Towels are in the bedroom with bedlinen, and toilet rolls in a kitchen cupboard. I keep a few in a basket in the bathroom.

See, we're having the same discussions at the moment, but we're opting for storage - as we have relatively little in our house. It's only small and with 3 of here we absolutely need it!

But if you don't, and as you say you struggle to get into the bath, I would recommend the shower.

Do you even need a bath? My mum recently got rid of her bath completely and just got a really, really nice big shower with lots of space and lots of jets, and it is SO nice!

optimisticpessimist01 · 05/12/2020 11:25

Shower definitely! We are renting in a flat that has a separate shower and its a million times better than a shower/bath. When we buy a house its something I'm going to look for from now on.

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/12/2020 11:27

If you’re selling soon then I’d say keep the storage.

BlenheimOrange · 05/12/2020 11:28

We just got rid of a HW tank cupboard to fit in a shower. What is the floor area of your cupboard? You may be able to fit both a shower and some tall thin storage shelves.

Seeingadistance · 05/12/2020 12:01

Shower.

TeaOneSugar · 06/12/2020 08:31

BlenheimOrange They said I could fit in a decent sized shower, bigger than the minimum space you need, but I'd prefer to use all that space than end up with a shower that feels snug.

I think once the bath has been move there room for a large sink vanity, with a good sized cupboard, possibly a further cupboard between the toilet and basin.

If I was staying forever I'd take out the bath but it's a three bed semi and I don't intend being here in my old (or late middle age) age so I think the advice is to leave it in.

Last question, how much would you expect to pay, for;

New ceiling and spot lights
New window
Tiles removed from all walls (currently fully tiled) new tiles around bath and shower cubicle, rest of walls plastered and painted.
New extractor fan (needs a hole making)
New bath (reposition but plumbing in roughly the same place)
New sink in vanity unit (repositioned to next to existing toilet)
New toilet in a unit, back to wall style (current location)
Floor to ceiling water tank cupboard removed and made into a tiled shower cubicle.
Shower door
Shower tray
Shower with rainfall head and handset
Heated towel rain (not a replacement) which is plumbed into heating and has an electric element.
Floor boarded and Vinyl click flooring fitted
All rubbish taken away etc.

Not including wall tiles, they'll tell me how much to order and I get that separately but they install and provide grout etc.

No, checked the quote, the walls are just plastered so I'd need to get someone in separately to paint (can't do it myself unfortunately).

5k or so. For labour plus tiles, cubicle, tray, sink, loo and so on.

BackforGood · 06/12/2020 19:54

As you say, it is a no brainer.
Definitely have the shower.
