Another Crittall 'Style' Thread.

Just trawled all the crittall threads and clicked on the links but feel a bit overwhelmed by it all and feel like I have been 'researching' for months and getting nowhere. I like to see things/touch things and I think this has made it hard for me to progress.

Looking for Crittall style doors for kitchen extension - it's a fairly wide opening - around 7 metres so deffo looking for 'dupes'. DH wants Crittall Style bifold, I prefer them opening outwards with a floating lock. but definintely fed up with seeking things described as Crittall style that are just chunky aluminium with chunky steel bars across the middle.

Is anyone in London/Surrey kind enough to share the supplier they settled on once they'd done their research? I'd count a MNer as a 'personal recommendation' and this would make me feel better :)

thanks in advance!

The problem with bi-fold doors is that by their nature they need to be clunky to fit the hinged fittings and therefore crittal style just means horizontal bars. I'm therefore planning a mix of doors and windows as follows.

I haven't committed to window supplier yet so can't help (yet!).

@NewHouseNewMe Yes - they are by far my preference. Two doors opening outwards set within a crittall style frame of fixed panes. I agree that the nature of bifold doesn't lend itself to fine steel/aluminium.

I keep waiting for someone to show me a bilfold door that it is fine framed/has some fixed panes above it doesn't cost a squillion pounds. I think I may be here some time....

Not bifolds, but we recently put in crittall windows by Fabco Sanctuary, and we absolutely love them.

Fabco look gorgeous. I am assuming that they are similar £££ to original Crittall though?

Have you looked at 1st folding sliding doors? They fit nationwide & have a fab IG page. My step dd used them for her internal & external doors and recommended them.

I've had a quote from Fabco. To do double doors opening out with fixed panels either side, 3.5m wide, plus internal double doors between living and kitchen, to include site visit for measuring and fitting was about £12k. Add on the extra bits (like handles on both doors and so on) and I figure it will be closer to £14k. That was cheaper than expected.

We're in London and used Maxlight

We’re Midlands, not South East, but the cheapest aluminium ‘heritage’ quotes we’ve had in so far are from Marlin Windows and Clearway Windows & Doors. Three full-height panels/windows and three doors (4.8 metres total width) plus shaped glazing above (in line with pitched roof) - similar layout to this: www.modelprojects.co.uk/southgate-north-london-extension-renovation/

Marlin quoted just over £8k for supply only. Clearway quoted just under £10k for supply and installation. If you took out the shaped glazing, the quotes would be c£6k and £7.5k. They both use Smart Systems, one of two manufacturers I’ve heard of - the other being Aluco. (The Aluco quotes we had are higher - I need to do some homework to find out whether you get what you pay for!)

We also used Fabco and are vv happy!
We had architects sourcing for us and they said that Fabco were significantly cheaper than original Crittal. I confess I took them at their word rather than researching myself tho!
