Loft conversion, doable?

Well after that thread I bumped into a dormer conversion on our same road! Seems like it's doable?

I don't think photos are identifiable but I'll remove of that's a concern.

Are you asking if you can do it too? If so it looks like you won't have any issue

PerfidiousAlbion · 02/12/2020 10:13

It's unclear from the pictures which house you're focussed on. Presuming it's the white one, then a conversion will directly affect two aspects of the neighbouring house.

Fressia123 · 02/12/2020 10:13

Yes that's right :) we're the yellow house.

Sorry, just re-read. Yes, well, there's your proof it's possible.

Blue5238 · 02/12/2020 10:16

Especially if you're on a hill, get a builder to come and look... Ideally someone who has done some lofts.
We are on a hill. Roof heights etc vary.... Some houses can just do the loft, some have to lower middle floor ceilings to fit it in. We lowered middle floor ceilings and got planning permission to raise the ridge slightly.

Fressia123 · 02/12/2020 10:16

@PerfidiousAlbion do you think we might have issues with the neighbour? (White House). We don't want to get too excited.

@Blue5238 yes we're on a hill. We're the end of terrace. The dormer would face the next house on the next block so we don't think it would affect their "view" although might have an effect on how much light they get. That being said it's just a tiny window.

Just ask the council planner to come down and take a look. You get them onside and can point out it has clearly been done already so I can't see any problems coming your way.

Fressia123 · 02/12/2020 11:45

We're hiring an architect (at least for the consultation) as we need to discuss other possible options.

As its tiny then no, shouldnt be a problem. How exciting! This is my next project.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/12/2020 14:33

If your house is the one in the first picture I wouldn't have thought you that you will have sufficient head height in the loft.

I think the minimum is 2.2 metres and your joists may need strengthening (which may raise the floor level) and you could lose some height if they remove any roof trusses and need to create 'A' frames to strengthen the roof. If it isn't that house you can ignore what I've said!

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 15:14

Yes it's the first one. We'd have to have a dormer as there's definitely not enough height but I don't know enough about it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/12/2020 15:58

If the height is not 2.2 metres at apex (allowing for floor and ceiling etc) then then I wouldn't think it was feasible.

Perhaps speak with a specialist loft conversion company and see what they suggest before you pay for an architect.

Loofah01 · 03/12/2020 17:33

You can always lower the ceiling of the floor below to ggrab some extra height.
Go on the council planning site and find the plans for the other house in your road that has already done it

nomdeguerrrr · 03/12/2020 17:50

It doesn't look like you have the height. Can you stand up in your loft at the moment. A former will give you more space to move about in but it won't raise the height of your roof at its highest..

LIZS · 03/12/2020 17:55

What room is your side window? I doubt your ndn can object to a dormer on the rear.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 18:55

The only window that faces the back is the bathroom's

OP posts:
LIZS · 03/12/2020 19:31

What is the one visible in first photo? Any that look directly into/or from a ndn are usually required to be opaque.

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 21:37

That's the bathroom's
