Tipping Friends Husband

My friends husband is doing a days worth of a DIY job for me next week. I don't often have trainmen in as my husband is pretty handy but is currently working abroad. Should I tip him? I don't know if being friends husband means I definitely should do as not to cause offense or shouldn't so as not to cause offense!

I thought the general rule of thumb was:
Their business i.e. they have negotiated their price - no tip necessary
Employee - tip

Are you paying him op? If so I'd buy him some beers as a thank you. If not paying him then yes deffo a large 'tip'

A friend or relative may be offended, so ask if you may pay him. Preferably before starting work. If he demurs, say you want to pay at least for the cost of materials.

If no money changes hand, a gift such as a nice bottle may be appreciated.

p.s.

if he is e.g. a plasterer and is doing a day's plastering, he may be expecting to charge his usual daily rate, in which case a mere tip would be too little. If you are friendly with his wife you could ask her to tactfully check.

It all depends...

If you are paying his normal rate, then tipping not really needed (though no doubt welcome). If he is doing it at ‘mates rates’ it is a really nice gesture to do a decent tip. If he is doing it for free and you feel super awkward about paying him then a good gift (bottle of booze etc) tends to be v well received / seen as generous.

Im speaking as a partner of a tradesman

Cash rarely offends

unmarkedbythat · 01/12/2020 13:38

Are you paying his usual rate?

In any case, DH is doing some s/e work here and there at the moment, he recently invoiced someone for £40 and she paid him £50; after checking she had meant to he was pretty blooming pleased with the extra tenner.

Yes paying usual rate

I'll maybe try to find out what his favourite bottle is when I see her at the weekend. Thanks all

good move. If you're paying the usual rate, to someone you know, a gift is I think more friendly than a tip.
