Essentials for a house

We are in the process of purchasing the furnishings for our second home which are about to buy (I dont need my ear bashed about the morals of owning a second hime) and I slightly worry Im going to forget to purchase something essential and stand there on Xmas eve going "oh bugger I forgot to buy X". Obviously we've got the furniture: sofas, beds etc, white goods, hoover, bread maker, coffee machine, bed linen, towels, saucepans, frying pans, cutlery, crockery, some cooking utensils but looking at it all piled up it just doesn't seem like enough stuff furniture aside it could effortlessly fit in the back of a large estate car. We've moved a lot in the past and there were boxes and boxes of crap stuff every time we packed up, we've needed a large removal van to shift it or maybe we've just got too much stuff in our current home.
We don't have to buy everything now but what do you think is essential in your home?

You really just work it out as you go along, I think - and that’s actually one of the nicest things about a new house, rather than rushing out and buying everything you think you could ever possibly need in one go. It won’t be until you decide to cook a pie a that you realise you need a rolling pin and a pastry dish, for example; or your friends come to visit and suggest making cocktails and you realise you don’t have martini glasses or a cocktail shaker.

Have you got a soap dish for the bath? This was my recent new house need. And a couple of good vases for the congratulatory flowers everyone will bring. A coat rack or set of pegs for the hallway. A doormat. The little things.

Ah a doormat good thinking batman grin.
Got loads of pegs haven't forgotten coat hooks, got the rolling pin as I already have two and the cocktail shaker again we've got two could be why we needed a removal van last time we moved.

more than once, I've moved into a completely empty flat. some of the first things I get are

  • rubbish bin
  • light
  • radio
  • bath mat
justgeton · 30/11/2020 19:12

I leave a toiletries and a make up bag there cos I can't be bothered with taking back and forth. Also underwear, pjs, SLIPPERS, and some clothes. Hairdryer

Good sealable jars if you are going to leave any basic food between visits -coffee, tea, spices etc. We've had mice in our absence before but they can't work out a Kilner jar 😉
Good quality games compendium
Zippable bedding storage and bedding for all seasons
A good stash of easily accessible battery operated lanterns in case you arrive at night to power issues
Bins that work best with the refuse/recycle system there
An old fashioned plug-in phone in case you arrive to flat landline phones and no signal/flat mobile battery
Basic toolkit
Know where the stopcock is!
Floor mats for bathrooms
Airer (one you can take outside as well for wetsuits etc if you're near the sea)
Tray/rack for dirty shoes and hooks for coats
External key safe in case you leave your keys at home
Couple guest bathrobes (these get used a lot)
Extra Iaminated cards with WiFi password
