Bold kitchen- will I regret it?

Looking for new kitchen in open plan space. Neither my husband or i like white or grey kitchens. Fallen for a mid teal colour and husband wants beaten copper worktop. So think white walls, midtone wooden floors, teal kitchen with copper worktops. Colour scheme of teal, copper, navy and burnt orange with natural brown tones from wooden pieces against white/pale walls... Is it going to be too much? Im swaying towards more natural tones but is it just because they are safe? How did you finalise your decor choices? Did you play safe/go bold? For context I have two cats, a toddler and a clumsy husband hehe

Some of those colours sound like they might clash a bit.

Are you likely to want to move at some point?

Ellmau · 29/11/2020 00:59

Maybe pick the teal bits but skip the orange?

NC4Now · 29/11/2020 01:01

Sounds very bold. Can you post a pic?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 29/11/2020 01:06

I think navy walls, teal cabinets & beaten copper work surface could look really good, but I think adding burnt orange will be a bit much unless it's just a few highlights.

I'd love to see some pictures when you do it.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 29/11/2020 01:07

Where is the orange going to be?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/11/2020 01:33

I really love the sound of the teal (but not the other colours so much) - teal units, wood floor, white walls and maybe the copper worktops seems nice enough - but adding the navy and orange sounds a bit overkill for me personally.

But then I like boring white kitchens - that are brightened with bold coloured walls and accessories (and that are easily changed when/if I get bored). However if you know you won't tire of the look easily and aren't planning to sell soon, it doesn't matter what people like me think!

caringcarer · 29/11/2020 01:49

A real kitchen sounds nice but navy and orange too sounds OTT. I am boring an insist on a traditional oak kitchen, which are becoming harder and harder to find as unfashionable. I prefer white walls and black worktops and to add colour with accessories. Then if I get fed up of colour I change them.

Fucking hell no. That will get so old so fast.

minipie · 29/11/2020 02:04

The teal, copper and wood sounds fabulous. Copper worktop sounds exceptionally high maintenance though!

BeanieB2020 · 29/11/2020 02:31

Sounds beautiful!

Anordinarymum · 29/11/2020 02:44

It sounds fab. It sounds like one person's taste but maybe not another's so go for it but don't expect everyone to like it. You have to live with it so think carefully before spending a lot of money.

This is coming from someone with a white kitchen and black unit tops and a black sink......... but I can always paint the walls any colour I like (currently white) and I can change the floor covering at low cost. Plus I can get accessories fairly cheaply also.

Another thing to consider is when selling the house, bland colours are a good selling point. Light bright and airy make a house look bigger and give the buyer scope for their own ideas.

Rambling now........... and maybe a bit jealous :)

waltzingparrot · 29/11/2020 02:45

Yes, you will 😉

I remember many years ago when I worked for a company who made bathroom supplies.

I had a new bathroom put in at home and because I worked for the company I qualified for a really good staff discount.
I bought a top of the range bathroom suite with an inset sink in a vanity unit and the bath was armacast and guaranteed to last twenty years. It stayed warm when you got in - it was not cold on your shoulders.

I could have got white. I should have got white. There were so many fashionable (shit) colours at that time and I was spoilt for choice.

Luckily I chose Wild Sage. It is green but not garish or dull like Avocado. I chose gold taps. It was a posh as fuck. The neighbours all came in for a look. I was the talk of the street :)The bath and washbasin stayed the test of time but I replaced the gold taps and waste with chrome. When I sold the house twenty five years later it still looked nice but I would never do that again.
My new bathroom is white with neutral coloured tiles. I do not get buyers remorse.

Such mixed reviews. Maybe no burnt orange then. Here is some examples to help people visualise

If it suits your house style and yours, why not.

tilder · 29/11/2020 06:22

Sounds amazing op, but I agree the burnt orange might be a bit much.

It is very trendy, so expect it to date. As you can see from the comments, most people struggle with anything outside the current trend of white, grey etc.

Personally, I loathe the neutral look. I think the pictures are beautiful. But when I fit a kitchen I expect it to last 20 years plus. Be sure this is what you want and you won't want to sell.

YukoandHiro · 29/11/2020 06:31

Teal, copper and navy = gorgeous, but very now so it will date fast. Are you willing to redo cupboard doors etc in 5-10 years to keep it looking fresh?

And brown and burnt orange do not go wit the rest of the colour scheme. I'd stick to white/grey/taupe elsewhere

HomelyK · 29/11/2020 06:40

I have teal sofas, had them for 5 years and still adore them. This is our forever home but yes expecting to paint the units another colour in ten+ years time if I get bored. I do love light colours wabi sabi scandi style too but I just dont think light sofas, ceramic pottery etc are realistic with young children. I really dont want to live in a home where I am constantlyworrying about spills and dirty fingerprints

Not sure why you are asking OP.

How you decorate your house is completely your own business. What we think doesn't matter.
If you are thinking of selling soon your choices may relect in your ability to sell.
If I bought your house with the kitchen you are planning I would factor in the cost of ripping it out.
If you are not planning to move then what we think is of no importance.
Personally I think it sounds hideous, but I don;t have to live with it.

I really don’t like it. It looks old already and copper is a nightmare when it turns green
speakout · 29/11/2020 06:48

How much natural light do you have in the kitchen? These are very dark and drab colours.

NotProudOfMyself · 29/11/2020 06:59

I think it looks lovely, and the odd splash of burnt orange will look fab (people are not brave enough with colour generally). If YOU love it, go for it. Life is too short to always be thinking of resale value etc.. if you get 10 years of intense enjoyment and happiness from it, then that is what really matters.

waitrosetrollydolly · 29/11/2020 07:16

You need to see this in your space before you commit.

There's a lady who's mentioned on loads of the kitchen threads on here called karen at OnePlan . Her drawings are in colour and I'm sure I read she works with clients and try's out stuff like this on the computer. Look on Houzz for her contact details and to read the reviews and see the cad images.

I like the sound of your colours, including the burnt orange!

wowfudge · 29/11/2020 07:22

Blue and orange are complementary colours so will be fine together. My concern would be the copper worktop. If it's beaten is it going to be flat and practical? Will it be lacquered to stop it oxidising? What if you get heat or water on it and damage the lacquer?

JacobReesMogadishu · 29/11/2020 07:34

I think it looks lovely. I’m all for bold kitchens. Mine is mint green cupboards with cherrywood worktops.
