Tips for a long living room?

The living room in my new house is 10 metres long by 4 metres wide. Think it was previously the living and dining room, which were knocked through. Any tips for decoration and furniture arrangement? My 'dream' living room dimensions would have been about 5x5. It's lovely to have so much space, but it doesn't feel like the easiest room to arrange!

I think you have to consider it two spaces really. Decide on the focal spot - TV or fireplace, say - and put the main furniture like sofas, coffee tables and so on around that. That's the main area.

Then have a secondary area that feels different, e.g. a chaise longue with side table, beautiful big plant or similar, or even a stylish desk and chair if you don't have a study elsewhere. But the goal here is luxe rather than functional so no folders or pens on view! Think 1920s writing bureau rather than a kids school desk or a computer desk.

Have you considered splitting it back into two rooms again? Each half would be pretty close to your ideal then, plus you'd have separate spaces you could use for separate purposes.

I don't understand the trend for "knocking through" when both the original rooms were a decent size!

I have a really long room, an older semi but actually built that way.
I use one half as a sitting room and kind of separate the two halves with a long sofa. Behind this I have a dining table, dresser and bookcase.

My parent's living room is like that. It us divided into three area, first is the sitting room with sofas, TV etc, middle had bookshelves and a wide open area, third is a table and chairs overlooking a picture window..

We put the wall back. The back of the room was a dumping ground, we now have a longer and playroom, works for us.

Thanks, lots of good ideas here. In time we might potentially look to divide the room again, but it won't be a priority straight away. It is a 1930s semi that has been extended and also previous owners went into the loft - it would have started out at about 1700 square feet and now it's knocking on for 3000. So there is a fair bit of ground floor space aside from the long living room. Again, a nice problem to have, but it feels a bit overwhelming. I like the idea of a nice chaise or something. Perhaps we could invest in a piano...!

I agree that you need to treat it as 2 spaces. So a seating area to one side and whatever you need on the other: dining/music/study/library etc.
