Upside down layout, a No No?

We have seen a house that fits most of our requirements, however it is upside down. 3 of the 4 bedrooms are ground floor and kitchen and living areas are on the second floor.
The design is to take advantage of the views.
Dh is concerned that it might be too difficult to sell at a later date because of the layout. Would it put you off?

I'd love an upside down house, this would be my dream house. The only downside I can see is lugging shopping upstairs to the kitchen. I'd only be put off if the ground floor was on a busy road with lots of foot traffic walking past my bedroom window. If I could build my own I'd have the bedrooms underground.

@EnormousBlisterPack

I'd only consider it if there was a decent terrace/balcony off the kitchen or living area. Not just for convenience to eat outside in nice weather but also to be able to open doors wide for air flow in the height of summer.
Ditto. Access to the garden via outdoor steps would also be a bonus!

We have upside down house, the main problem with them is if it’s on a hill ( most of them are ) you have to carry everything up or down to them , ours has access on both levels so not too much of a problem.

Lots of pros and cons too them , ours is very dated too and. Needs a lot of work but it will be nice when it’s all finished. Go for it 👍

Love that too @Chumleymouse

I think they make sense when they are on a hill like PP.
We viewed one - in a town, no views to take advantage of but a dark plot so it makes sense to have the lighter rooms used during the day. However, no direct access to the outside from the living areas, a Juliette balcony only. We have DC and so although the house could have been made lovely it was a complete no from us.
It is still on the market a year later and I think whoever buys it will end up flipping it round into a conventional house and/ or converting the double garage into living space to create a downstairs kitchen and living area.

@Chumleymouse Your house is gorgeous, the one we are looking at has zero kerb appeal but that's something that can be addressed at a later date?
You can get out to the garden from the living areas and kitchen thankfully and there are two separate drives/entrances so there is no problem having to haul the Tesco shop up stairs.

Did dh like it?

Mintine · 01/12/2020 17:23

Wow, it sounds amazing, I would definitely want it if not for the upsidedowness, then for the acres of land and the revolving summer house! I love those, they have one in the John Lewis near us and I always have a sit in it.

Mintine · 01/12/2020 17:25

Chumley, your house is lovely. We are actually moving into rented in the next weeks or two, and that’s actually an upside down house! Like a bungalow at the front, with the floors at the back.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/12/2020 18:02

Ah well, it's academic now.
Owner has accepted a higher offer from a builder apparently.
He's going to put a small house on the acre of beautiful land.
Sad

Oh that’s such a shame

Chumleymouse · 01/12/2020 18:30

That’s a shame ....... we have enough space to build a small house, the plot is about a 1/3 of an acre , but it would mean losing the garage and having neighbours right next to us.......no thanks. I’d rather have the space.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/12/2020 18:45

Dh thinks we might have been played a bit?
When we turned up yesterday it had 'under offer' on the sign, when we queried it, the estate agent said it was a sale that has fallen through. He is now full of conspiracy theories, I think he's just focusing on something to quash his disappointment.

I would prefer it if I was in the market for a house.

DeeplyMovingExperience · 02/12/2020 08:54

I had an upside down house - a barn conversion with the most amazing views from upstairs. Downstairs bedrooms looking out of the garden. It was beautiful and we loved it there.

The only slight pain in the arse was having garden/barbecue parties and having to schlep things from the upstairs kitchen, but that was small potatoes for all the many benefits. Also bringing groceries upstairs. We fondly called it The Tree House.
