Talk to me about dipping doors to strip paint off them

I've found some lovely wooden doors in my new house, but they have got old yellow uneven paint on them. I think they must be original to the 1930's ex-council house.

  • Will taking them to be dip stripped work to get the paint off?
  • How good condition do they need to be in? (They had panels pinned to them with tacks, so there are small holes where the tacks were)
  • Do I need to get all the metal bits off first? (Like the oojimawhatsit that clicks into the door frame when closed)
  • Anything else I should know?

I can’t answer the practical questions, but my mum had the doors stripped in the house I grew up in and it was definitely worth it, they looked loads better afterwards. I think that the company that did them made good little holes and removed the metal work/put it back, but this was 30 years ago so don’t rely on my memory!

It can dry doors out. It’s not terribly good for them I think. The previous owners dipped the doors in our house and they cracked a bit....not a fan.
