Any tips no avoiding having yobs as neighbours?

We live in London and are moving to a city in the west country in the new year. We have had dreadful neighbours which has really affected our quality of life. As I type gangsta rap is booming through the party wall.

We wont be living in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere (unfortunately) so will have neighbours. But due to our experience am desperate to have normal, considerate, decent people next door. Appreciate this is impossible to be sure about but does anyone have any ideas to help ensure we dont go through this again?

Would agree with those who said stake out the street beforehand, also don't ask a general question such as 'have you had any problems with the neighbours' but be specific eg what sort of noise can you hear from them, how often do they have parties, what sort of hobbies do they have (trying to rule out weekend-long car repairing) etc, etc.

also don't move next door to people who have a swimming pool or a hot tub in their garden - guaranteed late night noise.

When we were selling our house, lots of people were put off by next doors trampoline.

I have to admit the creak, creak, creak did get on my nerves and heads/bodies bobbing up and down looking at you whilst in your own garden, was not that appealing either.

Is there not some new law about sellers of a house having to reveal details of numpty neighbours (although I guess that the lawmakers put it somewhat more delicately). My mum's cousin told me about it, he lives in Scotland though so it might be a Scottish law.

Actually, now I come to think about it, he is known as a practical joker, perhaps he was taking the piss.

It's no joke and it's not new. When we moved 3.5 years ago I had to fill in a legal form saying I had never complained to anyone about any neighbors in any way, and it's a signed legal document. I didn't have to lie, but my seller of the new house did (and moved deliberately without leaving any forwarding address which is another story). That's why we are trapped next to ASB neighbors and can't say a word to them or the council, we want to sell ASAP and mustn't give any sign that admits there is a problem.

It's a licence for ASB.

It holds in England anyway, dunno about Scotland.

o no fimbo they've got a trampoline as well, next to their private garbage dump.

did you manage to sell in the end? How?

kindersurprise · 23/10/2007 12:16

God, that is awful. And I guess the problem is that you are never actually protected because even if you were to be assured the neighbours were ok, the house next to you could be sold and the new neighbours terrible.

Added to that, having annoying neighbours means that your house is really difficult to sell.

And the statistics about neighbourly disputes have gone down, as no one will want to complain, so the politicians can pat themselves on the back that the new law is working.

That's horrific Majorstress. Poor you .

With our neighbours trampoline they had moved it away from our fence to let the grass grow again underneath it, so it wasn't as visible out the windows when the people who actually bought it came to view, plus if memory serves me right they were away on holiday, which was another bonus. I am not anti-trampolines, I just don't think they work if you have a postage stamp size garden.

We are moving to our new house on Friday and my dc are harping on about us getting one, thankfully its a bit too chilly at the moment but we probably will get them one next year .

Good luck with it all.

Fimbo · 23/10/2007 13:23

Oh and out of about a dozen viewers, only 2 of them never mention the trampoline, 1 of them being the buyers of the house!

majorstress · 23/10/2007 13:28

That's why I think it's a licence to ASBO. There's a name for the form, FTTPS or somehting. It's a bizarre legal thing that seems unique to England, but I could be wrong there.

The neighbours from hell site won't let me register so I can' t look at anything on it!

majorstress · 23/10/2007 13:30

Well we have a trampoline too but it would be removed for viewings.

I could TRY to speak to neighbors, maybe hire a skip for them, when the time comes. They think I'm snooty-I suppose I am, not enjoying wading throught their rubbish!
