Internal doors - opinions please!

Hi, we live in a 3 bed semi. We are currently half way through having our loft converted and as a result of that need to have new internal doors throughout the house (fire doors). The ones we have currently are 4 panel, painted white. If we go for the same style, the price is included. But if we want oak, it would ba approx £850 more. I cant decide what to do. Its our forever home so not bothered about adding value - and we can afford the oak, but im thinking what else the £850 could get us (like a new back door) and cant decide! Any opinions welcome :-)

I would get the oak doors, no question. Cheap doors are exactly that, cheap, and they look horrible.

PanamaPattie · 24/11/2020 22:01

Buy the oak.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/11/2020 07:30

Yes oak, left in natural wood.

custardbear · 25/11/2020 07:39

We bought Oak from Benchmarx quite recently, they were only about £35 each plus VAT so shop around

SoupDragon · 25/11/2020 07:40

Forever home...? Go for the oak, absolutely!

custardbear · 25/11/2020 07:41

Do you need fire doors on all doors? They're REALLY heavy!

Were they fire doors though?

Buy the oak, doors are expensive to buy and replace and if it’s a property you intend to stay in for many years, you will regret it if you don’t buy the doors you really like.

PenguinBarnotBird · 25/11/2020 07:45

Any pics of the choices? I think it might depend on what floors etc - we had wood doors sprayed white as that better suited the overall look. We also had white door frames, skirting & ceilings. With wooden floors I thought wooden doors would be too much.

Beebumble2 · 25/11/2020 07:47

Go with the Oak. We completely gutted a three storey house that had to have fire doors, we put in oak doors and have never regretted it. They’re lovely to look at, finish the rooms off and people always comment on how nice they are. Not cheap but worth every penny.

TimetohittheroadJack · 25/11/2020 07:54

custardbear if you do a lift extension every habitable room needs to have a fire door or you need a sprinkler system fitted to net building regulations.

We went with the cheaper doors as when we did ours. I wish we had went with the nicer ones now and plan to change them all when I can afford it

BlueCowWonders · 25/11/2020 08:44

I love my doors! I wasn't bothered about much at all in our extension but the doors really make it.
Also worth thinking about the cost of the doors as a % of the whole cost of the build

Shadowboy · 25/11/2020 08:45

Oak is beautiful. If I could afford oak doors I would opt for them like a shot

Loofah01 · 25/11/2020 09:45

I'd also go for the oak. Look for the difference between solid wood oak and oak veneer though. The veneered ones are actually pretty good and obviously much cheaper than the solid version.

Chumleymouse · 25/11/2020 10:10

The down side with the oak doors ( veneered) is they are difficult to repair if they get damaged , chips etc. And also you can’t cut/ plane a lot off the edges as the veneer is not that thick. Make sure you measure the frames first to work out if they are able to fit, without having to take to much off 👍

palacegirl77 · 29/11/2020 15:21

Thanks all! Still not decided. Yes have to be fire doors so work meets safety regs. We had white 4 panel previously and they looked fine. Tempted more by the oak upstairs as its grey berber carpet, but downstairs we have treated floorboards and Im worried it will be too dark with the floors!

I would just go with the cheap option.. The white ones.. Especially if that's what you're used to..
