Cambridgeshire living

Hi All!
Cambridgeshire mums!
Where is best to live with a little one?
Somewhere with good schools, good public transport into Cambridge, but really want to avoid anywhere with student accommodation. A nice family area please!
Ideally somewhere rural and pretty quiet but with amenities. Bus and train service needed. Community would be nice!
Budget 350k ish!

Thank you :-)

If you want a fancy posh and pretty market town, hop 1 mile over the border to Stamford. In fact Stamford is where 4 counties meet; Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Rutland & Northants.

£350k won't get you a lot there though.

Stamford is beautiful but you pay for that and rhe traffic is horrendous.

I don’t know why I didn’t suggest Bury St Edmunds! Half an hour to Cambridge by car. Always had an excellent high street and is stunning.

I just had a quick look on Rightmove and for £350 you can get anything from a decent size three bed in one of the new developments or a quaint cottage in the old town. Plus people would actually want to come and visit and there’s loads of historical buildings to visit.

Ely isn't rough at all. We are very well known for having a lovely community. Personally I am impressed with primary schools and the only secondary.
Very regular trains - 16 mins to Cambridge, 1 hour 10 mins direct to Kings Cross. 350k will get you a nice 3 bed.

If you want a pretty well connected village with good schools Great Shelford is ideal but your budget will not stretch far e.g.

Villages to the East of Cabridge e.g. Balsham, Linton are cheaper but loose the train connection. If you want more rural the villages around Saffron Walden are lovely.

The area north of Cambridge is less attractive but much cheaper. Newmarket feels quite deprived. Ely is attractive but quite cut off and I personally find the flat landscape quite bleak.

justanotherneighinparadise · 26/11/2020 09:36

Newmarket is lovely!! I have no idea why you think it feels deprived. Mildenhall id agree with you but Newmarket is fab.

weepingwillow22 · 26/11/2020 09:45

@justanotherneighinparadise I just felt Newmarket felt a bit seedy in places when I visited. Maybe I caught it on a bad day but I think associated with the horse racing and gambling industry and number of empty shops. I agree there is far worse places though.

I think it’s like judging Cambridge off the back of Cherry Hinton. There’s always going to be more deprived areas of anywhere, that doesn’t mean the total area is deprived.

Is Cherry Hinton a deprived area?
