How can the front of this ugly house be made nicer on the cheap please?

Having seen so many great ideas on here over the years, can anyone think of a way of making this house look nicer?

OH thinks it is because it hasn't got a downstairs window on the left hand side. I can see what he means but that part of the house is the under stairs cupboard so without remodelling the house I can't see a way of changing it.

House is close to top of our budget as we need to put a garden office type thing in the back, so we can't do anything too extravagant to it.

Link added for any aspiring architects who want to comment on the rest of the house.

I don't think its that bad. Typical of a style house round here. I love the plants idea though!

I agree that the cheapest way to do it would be to plant a beautiful tree that has all-year-round interest - a maple or rowan or ornamental plum in front of the big blank wall. Train some pretty climbers up that wall - clematis or honeysuckle, wisteria or abutilon. I'd update the porch a bit but if you don't want to spend money on cosmetics, just get two big planters for either side of the porch and train something like passionflower or ivy up the spindly poles of the porch.

Bins go to the far side of the kitchen window.

@Didyousaysomethingdarling - that is a brilliant suggestion. I love the cladding and sweeping driveway. Looks so good.

Since it's at the top of your budget, something you can do pretty cheaply (and that would give an immediate visual improvement) would be to get a long but narrow plant trough and place it on the ground directly below the upper left window at the bottom of that big expanse of wall (because the trough is narrow it shouldnt block the current path to your front door too much).

Then get some white trellis (paint it if needed) that's roughly the same height as your front door/ the same width as the window above and fix to the wall above the plant trough. You can train an evergreen climber to grow up it, but in the mean time while it's growing, the big rectangular white trellis should visually mirror/mimic your front door on the other side and make the house look more symmetrical.

To break up the big expanse of wall further I'd also put a colourful hanging basket either side of trellis (again could use either white hanging baskets or white/mixed colour flowers to tie it all together).

Add a large porch to the front with a window. Render the fuck out of those bricks. I’ll come back with more ideas, but that’s a bargain.
