Self build timber framed extension

We are considering a first floor timber framed extension on top of a ground floor extension we had built a few years ago (approx 12m squared).

Has anyone self built one? We have a family of handy, albeit not actually builders, men. And we're considering that they might be able to build it largely themselves.

You would still need to ensure the ground floor has sufficient foundations and wall integrity to take a first floor extension. What about the roof of that building? How are you demolishing that? I have no experience of building one but I know the skills needed are still building ones. I would get a builder!

Constructing in timber can be quite straightforward. But there's a lot of other services that'll need to be done by suitably qualified trades (electrics for example). You'll need a plan to get planning consent and building regulations approval from your local authority. An architect should be able to help guide you on how to check if the foundations to the ground floor extension will support the additional storey, and if you've still got the plans for the initial extension they might help determine this.
