Looking at houses and the market is dead. Will it pick up in the new year? I was looking a few month ago and there was far more choice. BTW not moving just being nosey

I think it always goes quiet before Christmas, even in a normal year!

ThatDamnScientist · 19/11/2020 12:21

Not looking at the buyers market but we are looking for rental atm and there is nothing locally! Actually that isn't true, there is an abundance of student property to let (I'm in a large uni city).

Whatisgoingdown · 19/11/2020 12:28

This is true of my area. With the parameters I have set on rightmove I've been averaging 20 or so properties over the past few months that are up for sale, it's dropped right down to 9 at present!

Mynameisntsusan · 19/11/2020 12:33

Actually there is loads of smaller properties but I'm looking (fantasizing) of a 3/4 bed, conservatory, lovely new kitchen, ensuite, pretty garden but neat, garage, decent driveway. Pretty village with amenities and decent pub, access to bigger village for shopping. All for max £300000. I mean its not much to ask 😉

And must be detached

We are looking atm and have lost out on the last 2 properties that have come up over the past month because they were the only ones to have come up and had lots of offers! Very depressing when our buyers can't wait for us so we'll be moving with family at this rate Confused

MellowBird85 · 19/11/2020 12:51

I’ve noticed this too and it seems to have been like this for a while. Reduction of stamp duty played a roll I suspect. Also, it seems that any property that has anyvaguely desirable features (detached, garden, quiet street, etc) is going on sale for a massively inflated price. I am in a northern pit village and some of them are going for £400k+.

MrsJamin · 19/11/2020 13:08

It started dropping mid Sept in my search criteria, we had an offer accepted end of Sept but didn't unsubscribe from the new house emails and literally nothing has come up in our chosen area that is in our budget. I'm not sure what we'd have done if we hadn't had an offer accepted, our buyers would be very frustrated by now.

lazyakita · 19/11/2020 14:45

I think it varies by area, but I've kept a close eye on the local property market here for a few years and it always grinds to a halt between now and January. I'll be curious to see if there's the usual upswing in spring (as we plan to sell and buy then, all things being well).

MrsJamin · 19/11/2020 15:54

This isn't just seasonal changes towards Christmas, it's been like this since the beginning of October.

ramblingsonthego · 19/11/2020 16:22

We sold towards the end of Sept. We has seen loads previously and then suddenly it all died. We luckily found somewhere that had been put back on the market after it had been taken off (one owner had died). We got a good offer in and it is now all progressing.

Had we not found it we would have been in trouble. Nothing is coming on in our budget round here. In 2 weeks we have had 1 new property. The rest all reductions of properties stuck due to area or condition (still overpriced). I think its going to be quiet now until the spring.

MindatWork · 19/11/2020 16:25

Same here OP (south east). We’ve been keeping an eye out since the beginning of the year but only 1 or 2 houses have come on that would suit.

There was a flurry after lockdown eased the first time with the stamp duty holiday, but I think it usually quietens down now anyway. We saw a house we liked on rightmove but it was taken off the market when the 2nd lockdown hit. I don’t think much will go on until the new year now.

Werk · 19/11/2020 16:35

Same here OP! I check Rightmove every morning, first thing, and just do a check on what has come on in the past 24 hours search and for the past few days there has been nothing at all! Usually there are a few flats or price reductions but - zilch.
We are about to sign a six month rental and so I do hope more comes on after Christmas although an agent I know said they are worried that people who wanted to move next year sold this year to get in before the end of the stamp duty holiday.

optimisticpessimist01 · 19/11/2020 18:28

We're looking in South Yorkshire and nothing at all is cropping up here either, luckily were in no chain so not in a rush at all. I had to double check I had all my email notifications still on because I hadn't received one in so long! I'm hoping it picks up again in January onwards

rabbitcarrot · 19/11/2020 18:48

Same here (West Midland) It's dead from beginning of November. All the houses in rightmove are either overprice d& reduced or coming back to the market for some reason.
Don't know the situation next Jan/Feb/March? Probably even less add to market due to approaching the end of stamp duty holiday, buyers are not motivated to buy to catch the deadline. Sellers are not willing to reduce the price either.

Justcallmemeg · 20/11/2020 04:39

One of my favourites has just back on the market. If only I was ready to move.

Burnthurst187 · 20/11/2020 10:05

I noticed way less property coming on to the market five/six weeks ago. We were watching three small Warwickshire towns. We have decided to put our search on hold for eighteen months

I put it down to furlough ending (the extension hadn't been announced) Christmas fast approaching, so much uncertainty jobs wise and as solicitors, conveyancers are snowed under a lot of ppl don't think they'll be able to market and sell in time to miss stamp duty not forgetting trying to find a house to buy when very little is coming on to the market

I've heard that Boxing Day is the most popular time of the year to put a house for sale. I asked why and the EA said it's because ppl have family round on Christmas Day and realise that they need more space!
