Removing gas fire

I have bought a house with a gas fire in it and want to get rid of this and close off the space. However I’ve also been told that I need to get the flue or chimney capped. My concern is that this might be shared with the adjoining house. Has any been in this situation and what did you do? House is 35 years old.

In a 35 years old house pretty sure it won't have a shared flue should be quite straight forward .

Is there an easy way to check?

Why do you think it is shared? There should be one pot per flue but in any event you can't just seal up a chimney, it has to be vented to prevent issues with damp

I had this done. The fire was taken out and the gas pipe leading to it was capped off. That was all.

@Time40 my gas fire is set in the wall so there will be a hole.

@FangsForTheMemory Yes, so was mine. I had the hole boarded over and then the wall was re-plastered.
