What's the name of this dado rail and skirting?

I need a section of dado rail.and skirting replaced in my house. Does anyone know the profile name of the dado rail and skirting and where I can buy a short length of 1m each?

It's a Victorian house. Dado rail is 3.5cm and skirting 17.5cm. Surely they must be common but I can't find for the life of me what the profile name is!

The skirting board is torus, but most torus boards have a little sticky up bit on top, so you'll need to look for one without that and make sure the curved part is the right size. Modern skirting boards also don't tend to be as thick as old ones, so that's another thing to look for. You might be best off using a plain rectangular board with a half round stuck on top.

I've had to match mouldings in my house and it's amazing when you start looking how many slightly different combos there are of little sticky out bits all slightly different...

Ah you must have similar era house to ours (1880s/1890s) we have the same.

Skirting: not Torus. You make this skirting with plain straight edge MDF and then a timber staff bead on top - that’s like a separate strip which has the rounded edge you see at the top. Once painted it all looks like one piece.

Dado: these are a bugger to match This one looks like a good match but you’d need a sample to check properly.

Watching with interest as I need to do the same! I really don’t understand how it works - surely you can’t buy skirting or dado rails “off the shelf” today that are exactly the same size and shape as one that was made 120 years ago. Which means I will probably have to have them tailor made and if so, who does that sort of job? Would it be a carpenter or a builder’s merchant? I’d presumably have to take in a sample for them to replicate? So many questions!

Unfortunately the cost of tooling something for such a small job probably won't be worthwhile so best to look for something close enough and adapt as necessary. Again specialist timber merchants or reclamation yards are probably the best bet.

january2021 you’d be amazed, a lot of the more popular patterns are still made the same as they were 150 odd years ago. But it can be hard to track the right one down especially as not all have names.

When we tried to take ours off in an old house it turned out to be something like concrete!

If you can’t find an exact match but can find very similar, you’re probably best off replacing the whole stretch (ie the whole wall length) with the similar match. Bespoke won’t be feasible for 1m length and is ££££.

Definitely try a local timber merchant, preferably an independent one rather than a chain. I spent ages online trying to match our mouldings before discovering that the local timber merchant had them all.

If you want exactly the same , it’s best to try and find a small joinery workshop that will be able to make some , it’s not a big job for the right skilled person with a spindle moulder.

Thanks all. I went to my local timber merchant and they had the exact dado rail.and skirting. It seems all the houses in my area have the same and hence they keep stock.

As minipie said the skirting is a plain piece of pine with a head on top.

So if anyone is looking for the same then I'd recommend going to yiur local builder merchant. Smile and politely ask for a sample to take home to check it matches
