Has anyone has any positive or negative experiences of weatherboard / New England style cladding please? Really interested in using this product to transform a dull house exterior.

Yes. We have Marley Eternit cladding on the upper elevations of our house in Cornwall. It’s fairly close to the sea and the rendering took a real bashing. There is some sort of pink decay (fungus) that attacks painted exteriors in Cornwall so we installed the Marley product. I’d recommend wholeheartedly. It’s excellent. There’s lots of info for house renovators about these products but this requires virtually no maintenance. Just a hose down every so often. We really couldn’t have real wood in our setting but what we have looks “coastal” and just right!

If it's what I call "featheredge" and made of wood, it will increase the amount of house maintenance because it will need regular treatment.

I am on the coast and it is often used to shed water from storms on exposed buildings. I don't know how long it lasts. it needs a breathing treatment as paint or tar trap water inside and promote rot.

I have some shiplap cladding but only at ground floor level so I can treat it with no ladder or scaffold needed.

If I was doing it again I might incorporate External Wall Insulation behind it, but only a non-flammable type like Foamglas or Mineral Wool (behind roofing membrane).

Don’t use wood products. The New England style you are after is the Marley product. It has no maintenance issues. You simply don’t need to maintain it and it looks like painted wood. Just get an experienced builder/supplier to install it.
