At the moment deciding whether to have chimney breast heightened for extractor fan and range or have total removal of chimney breast, does anyone have any experience/suggestions?

Do it with a qualified builder and get fully signed off building regs or any future buyers will be wary of touching it (recent experience).

We did this. You need to get plans approved by building regs and paperwork to show this has been agreed or it will be a royal pain in the rear. It was the correct decision for us and finished result looks good. My ex is an architect technician so was totally up on the paperwork side of things.

We looked into this but the chimney just wasn't wide enough to fit a 900 range in without making the opening an extra brick wider each side

We did this and result looks really good. Definitely better than removing the chimney breast if its reasonably central within the wall (we had to have one side built up a bit with a stud wall to make it symmetrical and sit in the centre of the wall).
