Leaded windows

My house has UPVC double glazed Georgian leaded casements. Windows are all in good order and structurally sound but I just can’t stand the criss cross leaded thing. Does anyone know if it’s possible to actually just replace the glass elements without having to rip the whole window unit out? many thanks!

It totally is as I’ve had just the glass double glazed part replaced when the window has gone misty between the 2 panes. All I would say is that it can be quite a tricky job, the beading has to be removed and replaced. I think the labour costs would probably mean getting whole new sealed units installed would be cheaper but a double glazing company will quote you I’m sure. My individual panes (approx 40cms wide) have worked out about £160 each plus VAT, that’s fitted.

Following! I have leaded glass and I hate it. I think it actually darkens the rooms too. I was quoted 8k to replace all windows

@Rina66....I don’t think that’s a bad price you know. I can imagine it is tricky work and I wonder if it’s really feasible on first floor windows up a ladder? Did the replacement sealed panes come with any fitters warranty do you know?
Many thanks!

Sorry, wasn't finished and didn't realise it had sent! 🤦‍♀️

I was quoted 8k to fully replace all windows and I would love to find out if this is a more realistic option.

@Chalfontstgiles - I didn’t think the price was too bad either, they do it from the inside so no ladders required. But, if they were replacing my whole bay window of 6 panes, that would be £960 plus VAT - I think the whole frames, cills shebang could be replaced for not much more than that. There is a warranty, only 2 years I think though, but understandable as my frames, which could affect the glass, are 30 years old! Local company, CRK Windows HP2, they had to measure every glass panel too, so did a site survey first. No complaints here 🙂

unless threre is something wrong with the actual windows, there is no need.

Just changing the glass units is a trivial maintenance job.

There will be (at least one) local independent specialist in your town who makes a living out of reglazing and repairing plastic doors and windows.

You don't even need a substantial company with its own helicopter, chairman, fleet of vans and advertising budget.

Ask around for personal recommendations from people you know and trust. Your windowcleaner may know one, or members of your residents association or horticultural club.

Advertising websites where people pay to be listed are not independent recommendations.

Woah, this just seems too good to be true. We have a whole house (just bought) with 10 year old white UPVC windows with leaded criss cross. The leading is stuck on the inside face of the outer / exterior pane. We want to remodel the whole exterior and Neo Georgian isn’t part of our plan at all.
Replacing all the windows in the house we reckon is going to be £15k upwards. So a simple pane replacement for substantially less (not to mention the guilt of landfilling waste) ....any reason why we couldn’t do this?
