we're finally getting our stairwell and hallway plastered .lt's a large area, i would like to paint it a nice neutral or magnolia colour. That way I can decorate with lots of nice family photos. Now after the plaster has dried should I do a white coat first then magnolia.or should I just put on the magnolia as its fairly cheap. Also which magnolia is good for coverage yet not the most expensive but not cheapest either

Magnolia is a bit dated. So many wonderful neutrals available so maybe up your search. We have a photo wall on Elephants Breath by F&B because the photo frames and mounts look great displayed against it. You can use lighter mounts.

You must let the plaster dry out. Use a plaster sealer and then choose an emulsion. Any decent make will do. They are all about the same in quality but some are washable. This can be useful in highly trafficked areas.

You need to seal new plaster first, after it’s dried out (7-10 days).
Something like this would do www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-trade-bare-plaster-paint-brilliant-white-10ltr/51004

You don't need to buy a dedicated sealer for the mist (initial/sealing) coat. It is pefectly fine to use contract matt white emulsion which you have watered down (often the tub will tell you how much to water it down by). It works out cheaper and has the added bonus that any leftover un-watered down paint can be used for the ceiling.

Agree with above, buy a bog standard trade white emulsion and water down for the mist coat. Then use the rest for ceiling. You can buy none magnolia neutrals now very cheaply, possibly worth investigating that before committing to magnolia?

After about a week when the plaster has dried, you can apply a mist coat (which is around 3 parts paint to 1 part water), then two coats of magnolia.

You can use your magnolia for the mist coat too, just diluting it with water.

I find Dulux paints are of excellent quality, are easy to wipe clean and don't cost the earth.

Eugh not magnolia! If price is an issue then good old pure brilliant white is better than magnolia.
