Regularisation - Building regs advice

Last year I had my garage converted into a room. I took on some builders and told them from the start I needed BRegs. They invoiced me for it £360 I think on top of the work.
I paid money upfront to start the work, half way through and at the end.

So as the work progressed, I kept asking about the regs to which they replied they were doing it and had applied etc...
But nearer the finish, they said they'd take photos and send them to the regulator.
They promised me they'd be in the post. Nothing came.
I held back the money at the end as I hadn't seen the regs yet but on the last day, in the evening the bloke came around and came through the house looking for something. I was on my own with the kids. He was quite intimidating almost demanding I pay the last money (£360) for the regs and I gave in as I just wanted him out of the house.

A few weeks went by and nothing came so I went to trading standards. They said they couldn't help me.
So I've been left with a big loan to pay off and really stressed about the regs. I know I can seek regularisation but I am worried if I'd have to pay out huge sums in case it doesn't meet requirements.
I've been worrying for months and just don't know what to do. I need the peace of mind but also can't afford it if things go wrong and they find any faults.
I'm also worried it will affect my buildings insurance.

Any advice?

Hi. Sorry that was a bit short but I think probably see if you can get a solicitor to write to the builders confirming that they had contracted with you to do the work plus sort out the building regs and are in breach of contract unless they can provide the evidence that they have dealt with building regs. Then the solicitor can threaten whatever civil remedies they advise unless they comply. If they haven't done it and you have evidence they agreed to do it you may have a case but a solicitor specialising in civil work will advise you better. Some firms will offer a free initial advice. Good luck OP.
