Slate worktops

Hi all,

I am looking at options for kitchen worktops and slate has been proposed as an idea. Obviously, you can read all the pros and cons lists you like but there’s nothing like real life experience. Has anyone got any experience of slate worktops and what they are like to live with, upkeep etc?

Thanks

Nothing to add, but planning a kitchen currently and following with interest !

It would be a no from me. Too dark. It has a matte uniform finish and I think it’s overpowering in great quantities. It’s waterproof and withstands heat well. Aggressive cleaners can damage the finish but I’m sure most people would just wipe it down. But it can chip. It would depend on the natural light you have in the kitchen and whether the colour and finish suits your units and lifestyle. I don’t know a single person who has it though. I think it’s just dark grey that puts people off and it doesn’t suit the darker kitchens that are fashionable at the moment.

3 of the walls in our kitchen are glass so lack of light isn’t really an issue for us. It’s mostly the maintenance I’m looking into because I’ve only ever had laminate worktops and have no experience of stone

We've got slate worktops. Hate them with a vengeance. Slate is porous so they always look dirty and get stained. You are supposed to regularly treat it but life is too short for that.

Don't do it.

MrsJamin · 10/11/2020 19:25

My worry is that I'd damage crockery on it as its so hard.

We’ve got state. It’s 8 years old now. Totally bomb proof. It’s is dark and sucks in the light but the same would be said for any dark surface

Ours is horribly abused and mistreated. It came from a Reclaimation yard, though wasn’t reclaimed. Did the whole kitchen for about £1k, though was a while ago as I said

Oh I’ve never treated ours and it’s not stained. Well perhaps it is but it doesn’t show cos it’s v dark grey

It was this sort of thing I was looking at. I also love their slate shower trays but that’s another conundrum for another day!

The only other problem is staining from limescale in hard water areas around reps and draining grooves. Can’t see any major issues but I think it looks a bit dated. I have a kitchen in a big glass orangery but I wouldn’t have such a dark worktop. Maybe an Island in state?? Not the whole lot.
