Hard flooring in living room

We're in the process of buying a house which needs fully redecorating, including ripping up carpets. The living room has patio doors onto the garden and is currently carpeted. I've always preferred (and always had) carpet in living rooms as I feel it's cozier but am thinking that with young DC and access to garden being from the living room hard flooring of some description (wood or wood effect) would be better.

If you have wooden/laminate floors in your living room how do you find them? Do you have rugs etc? Would love to hear the pros and cons.

I am a chikdminder. I got rid of carpet as it gets trashed bug rug very easy to replace every few years.

My backdoor goes through lounge. We do have a mat by back door

We're going through the same thing as you OP. Got a through lounge with carpet and two small DC who have made the carpet look even worse than when we moved in! Have to hoover every day.
I love the cosy feel of carpet but it's not practical.

We plan to get hard flooring but weren't too sure what type. Karndean sounds like the way forward...I guess rugs are easy to roll up when you need to or easily updated.

I wanted Kardean or Amtico but couldn't find anything I liked so for our dining area we have engineered hard wood floor which looks amazing but we will need to look after! going to get some larger than life door mats as EHW shouldn't get wet! I love carpet for a living room and luckily our living room is at the front so we can carpet that section. Big rugs will be your friend. Not the fluffy kind! the kind you can hoover!

Thanks all, I keep obsessively looking at Pinterest for "cozy hard floor living rooms" . I like the look of this one but our living room will be bigger, it's 20ft by 11ft.

100% nightmare having carpets to the garden with little kids. If I had a door directly to the garden from a living space I would definitely put in hard flooring (plus rug for the doorway).

I've got laminate in the lounge. I hate it. It's a nightmare to keep clean!

Our front door opens directly into the lounge , same with kitchen , so have recessed coir Mat by the doors and karndean reclaimed wood effect flooring all the way through. Love it as so easy to keep clean and very hard wearing , stands up to small children and guinea pig pee 😂
