What deluded and downright weird properties have you viewed...

Just for fun, I'm not looking for a analysis on house values... We've looked at lovely properties, project properties and everything in between. We've also viewed a number of "looks great on rightmove" but then you turn up and its so far off the advertising you have to laugh...

My favourites so far...

  1. House priced similar to nearby village despite being much closer to busy road but photos looked reasonable and described as "Move in ready, high standard of decor". It was not. And they had some how managed to avoid photographing the 4 MASSIVE inbuilt reptile tanks, one of which formed part of the wall between bathroom and bedroom so both you and your gecko could watch family members take a shower.
  1. House on market several months ago, front garden, courtyard back garden and detached but sizable garden plot, garage and workspace. Recently returned to market for the exact same price, listing states "good outdoor space". But front garden has been tarmaced. Garden, garage/workshop turns out has been sold off. Asked EA "So theres not actually a garden now?" Reply "But you dont need it because now you've got parking for three cars!" (Two bed house). Hmm
  1. Very ordinary house but nice location, listing highlighted "lovely views" and "family ready home". Vendor was a keen amateur builder. Missing walls, doors to nowhere, garden full of "summer house" projects. But best of all was the enterance porch, which was a sort of stilted-lean-too complete with wet room and toilet. So you could sign for a parcel whilst sat on the crapper...

This is not a current property that's listed sadly, but when we were looking to move approx 4-5 years ago we saw what looked like a fabulous property online. It had a separate outbuilding that was split over 2 levels and would have been a perfect office and studio space for us as we're both self employed. It looked pristine and was well within our budget, just a stones throw from my parents as well which was handy at the time. We booked a viewing, went to see it and the outbuilding was as good as derelict. The roof was caved in and it was wrecked inside- walls damp and floor had all lifted. We couldn't believe it!

They'd obviously used an old photo of the space. It was with one of those DIY online agents so no one to complain to really. We were livid having driven 3 hours to view!

NewHouseNewMe · 09/11/2020 21:32

I'm now disappointed that I didn't see a single weird property! I did show up to an open day where the owner wouldn't allow anyone inside. So all these people were walking around peering in the windows!

We left without peering in any windows!

AnnieMaul · 09/11/2020 21:36

Oh and just thought of another! Detached bungalow with attached double garage, lots of land surrounding. Contacted the agent only to be told that only 1 of the garages would be yours, the other one would be demolished prior to completion and the land actually wasn't included as the seller was keeping it as he'd got planning to put another property on it Hmm

Byemelania · 09/11/2020 21:38

House overlooking cemetery. Agent says - “neighbours are quiet” “no chance they will build on it!”

MissKittyCat · 09/11/2020 21:40

Looked at a house which was over priced as needed a new kitchen/bathroom/windows as they were the originals from when the house was built 30 years previously and it wasn't priced to reflect this. When we viewed the vendor said he wouldn't accept less than asking price and also as he was down sizing to a retirement flat he wanted the buyer to pay another £5k for all the furniture he wasn't taking.

AnnieMaul · 09/11/2020 21:41

Sorry me again, but we have moved many times! When searching rightmove we also came across a listing that advertised "Swimming pool" as one of the "Key Features"

...what was pictured was one of those Intex paddling pools with the rigid sides. And not a big one, just a standard 8-10ft job and it was full of leaves Confused

We did not view in person.

GreenBeeSW · 09/11/2020 21:41

@NewHouseNewMe I wonder if they got any offers?!

@AnnieMaul Oh my gosh, what a waste of everyone's time. I do think some vendors are genuinely blind to detoration! Not the same level, but a relative of mine is trying to sell and genuinely believes the kitchen is lovely even though there are several knobs held on with blue tack...

@MissKittyCat Haha, was it even nice furniture?

We viewed a property that had squatters in who were cooking their tea and let us look around. They were also not English and we were sure they were illegal immigrants. The estate agent was horrified and said she would be calling the police and border force when she went back to the office. They had illegally bypassed the electricity meter and had feet and feet of extension leads. The house was a death trap and we left very quickly.

ramblingsonthego · 09/11/2020 21:50

We also viewed one that had a massive brick built coal shed in the middle of the patio. Couldn't understand why they had built the brand new patio around it instead of removing it. Estate agent tells us it belonged to next door and we were not allowed to get rid of it. Surprisingly we didn't offer!

MissKittyCat · 09/11/2020 22:00

@GreenBeeSW No - I'm guessing the furniture was bought new at about the same time as the house...

GreenBeeSW · 09/11/2020 22:02

Grin @ramblingsonthego How on earth did the estate agent not know someone had moved in?!

I dont think they had had a viewing on it in a while. It was overpriced in good condition and very overpriced with the illegal squatters and death trap electrics.

Dh once viewed a flat that was entirely unremarkable - until you got to the bathroom, which had thick, purple shag pile carpet on the floor, up the sides of the bath, up the wall and across the ceiling!

For some reason, he didn’t make an offer.

Watto1 · 09/11/2020 22:17

Looked round a flat with purple shag pile carpet in the bathroom. Carpet on bathroom floors is grim but the owners liked it so much they carpeted the side of the bath as well! Also the loo in this bathroom was on a little platform where you had to go up two (purple carpeted) steps to get to it. It would have been literally like sitting on the throne!

Watto1 · 09/11/2020 22:18

Cross post! STDG - it must have been the same flat! There can’t be two of them surely!

Runningoutofnamestochange · 09/11/2020 22:23

Once viewed a house in our perfect location to find the dining room had had a bit partitioned off to make a corridor. This meant the dining room was now just a small poky box with no natural light so, with the door shut, it was just pitch black. Odd.
They had also partitioned off a triangle in the corner of the bedroom to make a shower room but it was just a shower in a tiny triangle room. No toilet or sink, just a shower cubicle.

Reminds me of another odd ‘ensuite’ we viewed. They had portioned off a section of the bedroom, leaving the bedroom an awkward L shape, and there was just a shower and a sink. What’s the point? If you aren’t going to fit a loo you may as well leave the bedroom bigger.

At least they tried to partition. We also viewed a place that had a shower 4 foot away from the bed. Just dumped in the corner of the master bedroom.

When you have a small budget you see some right weirdo shit holes 😂😂

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 22:30

Purple bathroom must be the same place!
This is probably outing as told so many people IRL but dh and had the strangest viewing ever:

Living room - paintings everywhere of nude women. Get to the bathroom - no bath the wife was like “oh we like to go to hotels a lot so we get in the bath together there (lots of smirking).
Get to the bedroom - mirrored ceilings - weird shackles on wall etc etc and it absolutely stunk of sex

What I found even more strange was that the (adult ish) son was also living there.

Shock I can’t believe no-one has commented on this!

SushiGo · 09/11/2020 22:36

We nearly bought a house that had a conservatory on the back. Fine - except the drainage pipes for the original house had been left where they were and the conservatory built around it so there was an open drainage grid under a bit of plywood near the interior wall where the pipe came down to lead to the sewers. And the roof was bowing.

They owners didn't think that was a good enough reason for us to have only offered a low bid!

Dear Lord, I hope there’s only one, @Watto1! ShockGrin
GreenBeeSW · 09/11/2020 22:39

The purple bathroom HAS to be the same house... surely that was never a trend?!

@NoTimeToDiet The most disconcerting thing was only two of the tanks appeared to have anything in them...

We viewed one about 15 years ago. On paper looked great - and, more importantly, “normal”. Priced as if it was pretty much ready to move in to, with maybe a bit of repainting only.

However.

The external wall of the kitchen had partially collapsed. As in, could see out, even without a window.

The “upstairs” was accessed by a very (very) tight spiral staircase which then owned was incredibly proud of. I don’t have a head for heights so DH went to view the upstairs as I wasn’t able for the staircase (it really was that bad, a stepladder would’ve been safer).

The living room had algae on the top of the wall.
