Moving in lockdown when you have no furntiure!?

I'm moving from a furnished property to a house of my own imminently. I'm excited but the monumental task of furnishing a house from scratch during lockdown is beginning to overwhelm me!

I need everything and my initial plan was to just buy furniture locally from independent shops and large furniture charity shops that have things in stock. Obviously all those kind of shops are now closed due to lockdown and I'm panicking!

Did anyone have to do this in the last lockdown? do you have any tips? or can anyone recommend any online furniture retailers that do quick delivery but still decent furniture?

Thanks!

Ikea

burrito · 09/11/2020 20:49

Facebook marketplace 👍🏻

islandtime · 09/11/2020 20:49

Facebook market place is great for cheap furniture

Palavah · 09/11/2020 20:50

Lots of charity/second-hand furniture shops are open. You can also ebay and gumtree etc.
Ikea is doing click and collect. Argos are delivering too i think.

You only need the basics to begin with - somewhere to sleep and something to eat at.

Belinderina · 09/11/2020 20:52

@laudemio @burrito thanks both. I'm so nervous ordering all my furniture without being able to see/feel/touch any of it in advance!

I was also going to say Ikea and Gumtree. Bought some shelves from Vinterior this week.

Belinderina · 09/11/2020 20:56

@Palavah - Everything my way seems to have shut and some have completely shut down after the first lockdown too. I really just need a bed, mattress, desk and chair so I can keep working from home.

We've recently used Furniture and Choice to buy a small sofa for the kitchen... it was excellent value for money and great quality, and the delivery drivers even delivered it to the room not just the door!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/11/2020 20:57

"The Range" is still open and you ought to be able to get some of the things you need from there.

burrito · 09/11/2020 20:58

We are moving and instead of charity donations we are sensibly pricing things to go on fb marketplace. It can work in your favour!

Nightmanagerfan · 09/11/2020 20:59

Facebook marketplace or local Facebook groups where people are selling stuff. Lots of things available locally to me with contact free collection (they leave on doorstep)

Ikea beds are great, especially with the pocket sprung mattresses. We have very swish vi spring bed but I still prefer the ikea bed in the spare room! A hemnes, classic! We also have one of their £30 dining tables as a desk, very solid and a good size.

Belinderina · 09/11/2020 21:20

Thanks everyone! I shall try and find my closest 'The Range', and I'll scour Ikea's site and see what deliveries are looking like. I had a good look on Argos but everything I like is either out of stock or long delivery waits. Going to have a look through FB and Gumtree too.

I was just ordering (more) packing boxes from Amazon and just realised I can get a bed and mattress on Prime delivered next day!

Freegle and Freecycle seem to have quite a lot of sofas and chairs at the moment in my area. Desks seem to go quickly. might be worth a look. Dunelm had a black table that would double as a desk last week .

Byemelania · 09/11/2020 21:33

Habitat - sales are good.

Cockadoodle27 · 09/11/2020 21:34

I'm a week or so into this exact position right now. Prepare for a mass of cardboard and foam stuff stacking up! Furniture without seeing testing first is hit and miss, I'm doing a LOT of review reading. Have been on a blow up bed, bit of a wait on the one that I want, but trying to be careful to not make any rash decisions about things I'll end up stuck with just because delivery is fast. Have took a gamble with couches though, the only 'quick' delivery for those is Ikea with a 3 week turnaround (I cant wait to stop sitting on the floor 😂)

JoJoSM2 · 09/11/2020 21:37

I wouldn’t rush it so you can give yourself time to find the right pieces.
You could just get a mattress to sleep on and a clothes rail for a tenner. Other clothes can live in bags for a few weeks.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/11/2020 21:41

I had to do this during last lockdown and John Lewis were excellent with fast delivery. Ikea was much slower, but may be better now.

Cockadoodle27 · 09/11/2020 21:43

I used AO for white goods (spot on and quick delivery), ikea for couches, the range for a few things - delivery is fast, furniture123 is also quick delivery but read read and read reviews for the same things on other sites first, and I have amazon on speed dial - currently learning to only put through one order at the end of each day instead of 'buy now' (so much cardboard) and have also used ebay for smaller/cheaper furniture bits. My long waits are on the bed(base - 3 weeks) and couches (3 weeks) and a corner unit that isn't in stock until late December. Marketplace has been handy for a few bits too. Plus I did my first ever tesco home delivery to stock up on household things, followed by an Iceland one when the fridge arrived (only place that seems to have slots left!) I've moved from a one bed furnished rental in London to a big three bed elsewhere so it's all been a bit overwhelming so far with flatpack arriving quicker than I can build it - good luck

Needmoresleep · 09/11/2020 21:43

Mattressman delivers a wide range of beds and mattresses within a couple of days.

Oakfurnitureland and its associated sofa company again have short delivery times.

AO.com deliver white goods, and a big range of electrical equipment including TVs, toasters, kettles etc, again within a couple of days and with competitive prices.

Madcats · 09/11/2020 21:44

In the 80's, I scrimped so much I moved into my flat (with student self catering kit and linen) and bought a mattress.

Think, before you buy loads of stuff.

jelly79 · 09/11/2020 21:51

I've just ordered from next and Ikea :)

DespairingHomeowner · 09/11/2020 22:10

I really agree with posters saying not to rush...

You could buy a guest bed to get you through & then buy your own hen you can test it. An air bed/z bed/ futon company bed in a bag are all options I would consider

The good thing about ikea is lots of reviews available, & potentially you may have seen some of the pieces in other people’s homes

What do you need urgently, & what can wait? I understand places like B&Q are open and would sell some basics

DespairingHomeowner · 09/11/2020 23:10

Also: Amazon have a good selection of chairs & desks
