Ceiling extractor fan for induction hob on island or built in extractor? Help please!

Hello,

I'm struggling to decide which kind of extractor fan to get for our planned island hob. Aesthetically, I like the idea of having one in the ceiling so that it's out of the way, but will it be too far away from the hob to be useful? If possible, we'd have it flush to the ceiling so no need for an extra "box" - does anyone else have this?

I hear lots of good things about induction hobs with the extractor built in but am worried that we'd lose all the storage under the hob to the necessary vents etc. Is this right?

If anyone has an extractor for their island that they'd recommend, I'd be really grateful to hear about it :)

Following with interest.

My dad have a meile induction hob with extractor in the middle and haven't lost much space below - this might be because it's venting straight outside?

We're planning, Ours will be in the island and I hate the thought of the extraction hood being in the middle of the room/eyeline as you look. We're also looking at the pop up ones

We have an Elicia hood that sits flush with the ceiling, vents outside and is more than powerful enough to do the job. So it’s possible and Zit looks great. However, we’ve had a ridiculous amount reliability issues and their customer service is crap so I couldn’t recommend especially given the crazy cost of it.

That's a shame Shytown

We have a Bora with built in extractor. Highly recommend.
It’s on the island and this is a Victorian property with very high ceilings. As you said, a ceiling extractor would be too far away and I didn’t want a big eye level one.
The Bora is very good and worth the money, I feel.

All depends on what you cook. I cook a lot of curry and Asian food with a variety of spices which have strong smells. I was advised by the chap in Westin that one which can extract straight out of an outside wall will be the best for me. Indeed we are not that affected by cooking smells - obviously a curry will have its own aroma but it's quite ok and we have an open plan area

This is just what I am thinking about at the moment so I am following with interest. I like the idea of a good light with in built extractor so I'm not that bothered by something dangling down if it looks like a light. That's a shame that Elica has crap customer service, they seem to have a great range.

I also recommend the bora with built in extractor. The extraction is excellent. We still have drawers under the hob, it takes up the top drawer but there is still space below for a deep pan drawer and another shallower drawer. I can post a photo later if that would be helpful.

A photo would be great, thank you! The person I spoke to at the kitchen place insinuated that the whole unit below the built in extractor would be useless basically.

Here's a photo showing the two drawers. The one above is false. Our bora extracts to the outside. I am not sure if the recirculating one takes up more cupboard space.

Thank you, that's really helpful. Do both drawers go all the way back? It looks so lovely - fab kitchen :) How often do you have to clean the middle bit?

The drawers are shallower under the hob at 43cm compared to 63cm. We have only had it installed a couple of weeks but I have put the filter in the dishwasher weekly. Still need to read the manual to check this is the recommended amount.

Hi, we have a Novy Pure’Line extractor above our hob which is flush to the ceiling (no box). Ceiling is 2.75m high. Works very well, we fry a lot and have an open plan kitchen so it needs to work and it does. Not had any issues except that it needed some extra screws when fitting it to keep it in the ceiling!

We also considered a Westin Stratus which has similar performance - they also do a compact version which fits into a Victorian ceiling space in case you need this.

Great thread. Watching with interest.

I've seen island hobs used in a commercial kitchen, and they had big canopies above. The problem with an island is that the fumes may drift around before reaching the hood, so it needs to be bigger and more powerful than an on-the-wall unit. Open-plan homes are especially prone to odour drift (I have one) unless you use powerful extraction, starting before you begin to cook.

Imagine a sort of open-bottomed box on the ceiling, about the size of the whole island. Without the box I think the extractor would need to be more powerful. You can incorporate downlighters in it if you want. The on/off and speed controls need to be remote, on the island, though you can get remote controls like for a TV.

I don't find any problems with fumes with the bora and we have been cooking lots of currys. You can viably see the steam being sucked down the hole in the middle. The only potential issue I was told about is that it is less efficient if you are using a very high sided pot. You are then best to half cover it with the lid so the fumes drift down into the extractor.

This is with one ducted externally. I suspect the recirculating ones are not as efficient.
