Utility Room Ideas

My new house has a utility room, which is am very happy about as it's the first time I've ever had one. At the moment though, it's pretty, well, utilitarian and as it's off the main hall and fully visible at all times I'd like to jazz it up a bit. I'd also like to make sure I'm using the space effectively and get a few more elements in there than just the washer dryer. So, what do you use yours for and, if it looks nice, could you share a pic?

Ours is the entire old side return extension. At the end is a toilet with a massive kitchen sink - before it had a tiny hand sink with a utility sink 2 foot away, this is much better. Kitchen drawers under the sink filled with batteries, bulbs, toilet paper, hand soap supplies. We also changed the way the toilet door opens for more space.

Then like you we have tumble dryer and washing machine under a kitchen worktop - on top of that I've put IKEA Algot. It was lighter than trofast but I cant see much of it on the website at the moment. It's basically given me baskets for putting away clean washing (one for each household member, bigger one for sheets/towels), a hanging area for clothes to dry, and shelves for washing powder. Underneath all of that are more kitchen pan drawers.

Followed by 2 tall cupboards for all the other crap- buckets, bags, hoover, boiler, cleaning stuff.

The other wall is covered in hooks for coats - ikea Tjusig hat rack - and the thinnest shoe racks known to Ikea. There's also a line of hooks on the back of each door that I also hang drying clothes on.

@PresentingPercy that sounds lovely. I would love a wine fridge!

@minipie I have been wondering what to do with the boxes in bit, because I can't fit a cupboard in front - that is a good idea!

@FannysSteadiedBuffs yes space for shoes and coats would be really useful. There's never enough room for all of them!

We love the wine fridge. We decided the laundry room was a better place for it as we don’t use it every day. It’s a Leibherr and I totally recommend it.

I’m planning mine at the moment. It’s going to have an elevated washing machine and tumble drier, open shelves for my sorting baskets, an under counter ironing board that swings out. I will have storage to the ceiling. I considered a pulley but decided against it and am putting a skylight in for light instead. I’m putting towel rail type radiators. And I’m putting a hanging rail between my wall presses and high unit.

I love pictures on Pinterest of pretty utility rooms with big glass jars of detergent and humorous signs but my room won’t be on show so I think I’ll have closed storage to make the most of the space.

Yes @thelegohooverer I think closed storage might be the best way to go, otherwise it's just another place to keep tidy!!

Ours is 11 x 8. Drier, washing machine, pull out cupboard next to machine for detergent etc. Beer fridge, extra large stainless steel sink with pull out hose tap. We also got the joiner to put a removable cupboard base over the area that houses the underfloor heating controls so we ca use for additional storage. We also have 2 floor to ceiling cupboards to house the hoover etc and extra storage. We put a new back door that opens outwards which is brilliant. As I iron in there we also had an automatic ceiling extractor to deal with the steam!
