Professional house clean before moving out

I’m hoping to complete a sale before Christmas. House already vacant and clean, apart from the oven which is pretty dirty, so I was going to get it professionally cleaned. Friends think this is crazy as people don’t usually clean their houses significantly when they move out...
Am I being over the top? The oven was filthy when I moved in!

I always have paid for a professional thorough clean or cleaned within an inch of its life myself (including oven!)

Although every house I’ve ever moved into has been minging!

MrsHookey · 07/11/2020 11:37

Last time I got a professional clean it cost me around £400 and that was 18 years ago. That excluded curtains. I would just get a cleaner to come and help me.

MrsHookey · 07/11/2020 11:37

Do what suits you. You're the one who is under pressure to get moved.

VinylDetective · 07/11/2020 12:24

I’d clean it - or at least have it cleaned. Cleaning someone else’s filth off the oven isn’t a good start to your new home.

lockdownguru · 07/11/2020 12:37

Personally, I don’t care how professionally the house was cleaned before I move in. I would still have it cleaned by my cleaner and by myself thoroughly.

Lilybet1980 · 07/11/2020 12:40

Definitely clean the oven. I would only get a professional clean if curtains and carpets needed cleaning.

S00LA · 07/11/2020 12:42

Just get some of that paint / paste on evil chemical cleaner .

Guardsman18 · 07/11/2020 12:48

My DM has her oven cleaned twice a year (?) and costs £65 each time.

If you have the money then could you do that? They take the thing to bits and it's gleaming at the end.

I am sure that whoever is moving in would be eternally grateful. I know I would.

PickleWithEverything · 07/11/2020 12:49

I'd clean it myself, properly. I've always left my home as spotless as I can, it seems like it would build good karma. Have been shocked at the state of the houses I move into though, so I'm probably in a minority.

MoirasRoses · 07/11/2020 12:52

Blimey, can’t say I was planning on getting the oven cleaned! I’ll make sure the house is dusted, hoovered & the bathrooms cleaned (by myself) but I’m not paying someone.. I got all the carpets, bathrooms & oven cleaned when I moved in here so if they previous owners paid, it was a waste of their money!

There’s no obligation to leave your house even clean but fingers crossed most people would be considerate & leave it reasonably clean!

SenecaFallsRedux · 07/11/2020 12:59

We have always had a house we were leaving professionally cleaned. Where I am in the US, there is an inspection, usually the day before closing, of the vacant house, and it's expected that it will be very clean.

AllBellyandBoobs · 07/11/2020 13:08

I had our oven professionally cleaned when we left our last house. The new owner got a message to me to say that she nearly cried with happiness when she saw it (I made sure the rest of the house was spotless too). Meanwhile the house I bought was left in a filthy state, especially the kitchen, and i nearly cried with pissed off-ness. I would much rather be in my buyer's position!

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/11/2020 13:27

I clean thoroughly to a standard I’d be happy to live with but wouldn’t have a professional clean. I’ve always managed to clean my own oven to spotless. Moving is messy, the place will be dusty and untidy again within hours. And surely paying to have curtains and carpets cleaned is pointless, don’t most people just rip the carpets up and change the curtains straight away? I know I do, I wouldn’t want somebody else’s no matter if they’d been cleaned.

VinylDetective · 07/11/2020 13:51

I wouldn’t leave or expect curtains to be left. I definitely wouldn’t rip up carpet if it was neutral and in decent condition. I find replacing stuff just for the hell of it pretty offensive.

SilkieRabbits · 07/11/2020 14:01

You are supposed to leave the house clean - just doing solicitors forms now and there's a box to tick to say house will be left clean, tidy and empty. So it should be cleaned though doesn't have to be professionally cleaned.

We had a cleaner in for 5 hours and did rest ourselves including ovens and carpets, most are new curtains are new or washed. We always leave carpets and curtains and have had them left for us and always use them if only initially. I would get oven cleaned either by you or pay someone.

Two out of three places we moved into weren't very clean but this last one had been cleaned professionally including oven and new carpets everywhere and it was so nice.

SilkieRabbits · 07/11/2020 14:02

I always tend to clean myself as well but if somewhere's already clean that's really fast whereas if there's 10 years of dirt it takes forever.

Ablemaybel · 07/11/2020 14:36

I always leave the house/flat I'm leaving clean, including oven and any built in appliances. We've moved 6 times over the years, and only 1 of the 6 was left clean. Our last move was awful. Kitchen cupboards were filthy as was the the oven, which we pulled out and took to the dump. Couldn't believe the colour of the water after washing the kitchen floor.
I don't understand why anyone would leave a place in that state.

MrsSpringfield · 07/11/2020 14:39

I would get the oven cleaned. And a basic clean of the property if it needs it. If it doesn't, just the oven.

Last time we moved my cleaner came for several hours and my dad did the cooker.

peach1234 · 07/11/2020 21:26

We've just moved into our first bought family home and the sellers had left it absolutely spotless, it made moving in so much nicer and we really appreciated it. We had booked a professional cleaner to come in and actually cancelled it so saved us money too! Was a really nice start to living in the house

funkyfruitloops · 07/11/2020 21:30

I think it depends on how nice you are.

We moved into this house and the oven was disgusting- I actually cried! It’s still too Smokey and greasy to enjoy despite us cleaning it. Can’t afford a pro oven cleaner yet!

But we had moved out of a house and cleaned the oven thoroughly ourselves beforehand. The house we sold was so clean our buyer sent us flowers to say thank you!
