Serving hatch, am I mad?

Hello
I (hopefully) move house soon. This is my downstairs layout. I don’t fancy one big open place space, I just prefer being able to close rooms off.

I am thinking of putting my dining table in the living room “nook” which is a shared wall with the kitchen and I really like the idea of putting in a serving hatch. The kitchen will need replacing at some point once I’ve moved in and saved a little. Would I be mad?

Any better suggestions?

The negative is losing space in the kitchen- cupboards etc.

If you can afford the space, do it!

BawJaws · 07/11/2020 08:35

I love my serving hatch! Do it!!

DanaScully53 · 07/11/2020 08:38

Weve got one from kitchen to dining room. I usually serve up and shout "service please" to my DP. Theres wooden doors on it at the moment but were thinking of putting stained glass ones in then we could see front to back.

OddBoots · 07/11/2020 08:39

I love it, we will be moving in a couple of years and the chance to have or do this is on my wishlist. I would ideally like a sliding door on it so I can put things on the counter before I open it but the shutters look good too.

Whatthebloodyell · 07/11/2020 08:40

That picture with the shutters looks great! Do it!

CottonSock · 07/11/2020 08:41

My friend had a large one put in and it looked great. And she's a lot more trendy than me.

Workingmum34 · 07/11/2020 08:46

We kept ours when we did our kitchen. We don’t use the adjoining room as a dining room (it’s the lounge with the tv in) so it’s very handy for shouting at the kids or leaning through and turning the tv of at the plug!

You get more kitchen if you block up the entrance from hallway

If it works who cares if it's 'dated'?

A hatch makes total sense in your layout.

EvilPea · 07/11/2020 08:55

We had one in one of our houses.
Amazing. Brilliant, can not recommend enough and I don’t know why they are dated.
Would leave it open and chat through it, had a dresser underneath so would pass stuff through and leave it on there to be served.

AliMonkey · 07/11/2020 08:55

Ours had one between kitchen and what we used as playroom (had presumably been dining room until kitchen extended to kitchen diner). I would have loved to keep it as brilliant for keeping eye on kids and chatting to them whilst I cooked as they were toddlers at the time. But then we realised that if we kept it we’d have either too little cupboard space or have to not have dishwasher or not have eye level oven. So the hatch went. So great to have one but not if you have to give up something you would find more important.

helloxhristmas · 07/11/2020 08:59

My fried jasmine like your picture but open, no shutters. It's brilliant. Go for it.

Bubbletrouble43 · 07/11/2020 08:59

I love a serving hatch. A friend once rented a house short term that was very dated in design, with some hilarious features, but it included a serving hatch. She loved it. I think they should come back in, they're brilliant.

helloxhristmas · 07/11/2020 09:00

Fgs. My friend has one...no idea who jasmine is

Bubbletrouble43 · 07/11/2020 09:00

Also imagining it would be fun to stroppily shut the hatch when people the other side are pissing you off 🤣

BakedBeeeen · 07/11/2020 09:00

The shutters would look lovely OP. Then you have the option of keeping the room separate. Apparently huge open plan spaces have hugely gone out of fashion in lockdown as people need space from their annoying family loved ones Grin

CornedBeef451 · 07/11/2020 09:03

We have a small one and it's really handy. I think bigger is better though, when I was looking for ideas for our kitchen there were quite a few photos on Houzz with big serving hatches that looked amazing.

Bluntness100 · 07/11/2020 09:05

I think this is like mrs hinches? Hers seems to work well if that’s your thing so go for it.

AriesTheRam · 07/11/2020 09:11

I loved the hatch from the kitchen to the dining room when I lived at home

sparklesandmoresparkles · 07/11/2020 09:33

We’re planning on opening ours out in our new house, but as the kitchen will be the last job in the house, as it’s not long been done, I think I’ll totally steal this idea in the meantime. Love it!

ClassyRodent · 07/11/2020 09:40

We have a hatch, when we moved in it was openable on the dining room side but tiled over in the kitchen so it wasn't a big job to do. DH loved it and reinstated right away lol. We only really use it when i pretend to be a cafe and call through with my children's lunch orders and they collect from the hatch. I mostly carry the dinners through the doors and put on the table, but but thats because there's never anyone at the hatch to collect when you need them!

Mousepad20 · 07/11/2020 09:47

Totally practical in your layout. Had one growing up before parents knocked through and in-laws have one now.

PinkBuffalo · 07/11/2020 09:48

Love that picture you put up op, think it would be ideal for your layout Smile

CatkinToadflax · 07/11/2020 10:10

Yes! My grandmother had a small one between her kitchen and dining room and it was really practical. As she got older (she lived in that house for over 40 years) it really helped her to not have to carry hot foot from one room to the next.

My elderly neighbour’s house is immaculate but the fixtures and fittings have barely been touched since the 1960s. I utterly love it. She has an enormous hatch between kitchen and reception room and as well as being practical it really lets the light in.

Go for it OP!

EvilPea · 07/11/2020 10:23

You need a well placed table or side board just underneath.

Op I would also suggest a case for your cutlery. I had a nice wooden Covered one.
So you take it in the kitchen when you unload the dishwasher and pop it back (through the hatch) when it’s full so it’s ready for your next meal.
