Opinions on this house exterior, please! Ugly or not?

Could I do a quick opinion poll on the outside of this semi, please? I believe it was built in the mid-1950s.

My problem is that I've only ever lived in tall-ceilinged Victorian or Edwardian houses so I'm struggling to understand the architecture of it. If you drove past this house, what would you think?

I like the house for the location (right next to the school we want for DS1) and has huge potential for renovation - we'd put a rear and loft extension on. So we could configure it exactly how we want, and hopefully resale value should be pretty solid because of its location. It's really just the look of it that I'm questioning.

Btw, it could be so much worse - my house is a 50’s build and it’s pebbledashed!

Iwantalonglie · 07/11/2020 05:53

Lovely. Our house is a characterless new build. Would swap instantly Grin!

There's a lot you could do to improve it too. Maybe drive about the area and have a look. Or start a new thread here if you're successful... you'd get lots of responses as everyone loves a home improvement thread!

Not ugly at all. Though that roof looks concerning. It looks like a shed roof!!

VinylDetective · 07/11/2020 09:30

It’s a perfectly nice house. You’ll never give the paving a second thought once you’re in.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/11/2020 09:37

I think it’s lovely. I really like that 50s-with-a-hint-of-Arts-and-Crafts style. Is it round Cockfosters / Southgate?

Pipandmum · 07/11/2020 09:39

The windows really let it down but otherwise looks good. I would have dated it earlier than 50s though.

StiffkeyBlue · 07/11/2020 10:19

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the comments, I'm feeling so much better about it now. Have mentally renovated and moved in already - really hope it all works out.

It looks ok but it would look so much better with a wooden front door. I would not a house too close to a school as parents park all over the place and block you in.

Mosaic123 · 07/11/2020 15:16

Re the alleyway, I guess it's a little more exposed than if it had a house next to it, but not a dealbreaker IMHO. I like the tile hung section. It's low maintenance.

Bubbletrouble43 · 07/11/2020 15:20

I quite like it. Yes, it's attractive.

StiffkeyBlue · 07/11/2020 15:50

@caringcarer We had that exact problem when we went to see it - there were two lots of parents parked across the drive so we couldn't have used it even if we'd wanted to. I suppose it's a trade off we need to consider, what with catchment areas for good schools around here being so ridiculously small.

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool You're in the right neck of the woods, yes!

@StiffkeyBlue I’ve already stalked and located Grin. It’s a great location and a lovely big garden! I hope it all goes smoothly for you.”

bluebird243 · 07/11/2020 17:36

I like it, it has character. I'm in a 1950's place and it is extremely well built, and also has character.

StiffkeyBlue · 07/11/2020 17:38

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool Wow, that is some seriously impressive stalking! I'm a bit scared of you now! 😋

Be very scared, I’ve found it too!

emilybrontescorsett · 08/11/2020 11:40

Looks fine to me.

augustusglupe · 08/11/2020 14:00

That's not ugly! It's a lovely looking house

Ygritte84 · 08/11/2020 14:19

I think it looks lovely! Smile

FurierTransform · 08/11/2020 19:49

Looks just like an average 3 bed semi to me.

copperoliver · 08/11/2020 22:19

Nice. X

HaggieMaggie · 08/11/2020 23:49

Not ugly, I think the roof tiles need to be red again and I would either open up the porch, I hate boxed in storm porches, which are glorious architectural features, I’d rather have a draft. Or change the doors if it isn’t a boxed in porch.
