My cooker is broken AGAIN, I need a new one and don't know where to start!

OK, so it's just the main oven that's broken. Over the last lockdown, the thermal cut-out melted and it took THREE MONTHS to get it repaired.

Pretty sure it's happened again, and we've just decided to just buy a new one!

I've arbitrarily decided that our budget is £1000!

The basics:
Electric (Ceramic or induction... all my pans are already induction ok)
60cm
The main oven MUST have a conventional setting as well as a fan setting.
The whole thing must NOT have a steam vent at the back.

I've had a look on John Lewis and I've not seen anything I'm impressed by. The rest of the choices are too vast, so I need help!

We have an AEG. It has fan and normal settings, plus a steam setting where you put water in a special container in the top. The steam setting makes the best Christmas puddings ever, and is also good for vegetables and baopao buns. It can also add a small amount of steam to bake bread perfectly. It has a temperature probe so that it will cook things until whatever temp you select then bleep and stop. So for example you can reheat until it's a non-toxic 65 degrees on steam setting so dinner doesn't dry out. Or a joint of meat can be cooked so that it's exactly your favourite level of pinkness. 40 degrees and bleeding in the middle for us, 65 and grey if the in-laws are coming for dinner! It's also got a pyrolitic cleaning setting and I think you can take the glass out to put in the dishwasher. We're still keen on it two years later

Your biggest challenge may be to find a cooker you can get. My DF has been having his cooker repaired under warranty since July. Every repair has failed or made the cooker worse. Finally, they've decided to replace it, but nowhere has stock and the manufacturer can't provide the replacement until January 20th at the earliest.

My DD has also just bought AEG with similar functions as above. Also an AEG induction hob. Both came to well under £1000. In fact around £700 as they were in a sale. Pyrolitic oven with steam function and fan. We looked at Bosch too but just not quite as well priced. These are oven and separate hob and I’d always get that. So if one goes wrong you are not chucking it all away. Can you get oven and hob built in?

I’ve got an electric neff one which I adore. Lots of different settings, easy to use, warms up quickly.

Mine is very similar to this but without the sliding door. www.neff-home.com/uk/productlist/ovens-compact-ovens/ovens/single-ovens/B57CR22N0B

There is nothing I'd love more than I wall-mounted oven and separate hob, but unless/until we redo our kitchen, that's not happening, so Neff is out. :P

Our cooker broke in lockdown and although there seems to be a myriad of choice, many are not available because the factories have been closed. We bought a Rangemaster and are very pleased with it. I think it will fit all your requirements.

have you had the electrics checked?

I agree with the aeg above. had one in previous house and it was great.

NightmareLoon · 11/11/2020 09:16

Thanks everyone, I'm looking at AEG then.

It's only the main oven, so sadly nowt to do with the electrics.

The first time, the thermal cut-out melted, and I think it's partially happened again, as the oven cuts in and out. Repair people had a lot of trouble getting the part and were told by Hotpoint that model didn't have a thermal cut-out!
