Kitchen storage ideas?

My new kitchen has some wall space and I’m not sure what to put there. A wall cabinet would fit, so you get an idea of the size of the wall space. However, I want to consider something a bit different there.

As a starting point:

  1. wall mounted microwave

  2. spice rack

  3. others?

If you have got an links or images then that would greatly help visualise it in that space! I need something metrical in colour too. Thanks!

We are putting up industrial. Style shelving. Wooden shelves with pipe brackets

Voice0fReason · 04/11/2020 21:58

Spice racks are dust traps

Smallgoon · 04/11/2020 23:23

Open shelves. Beautiful rustic wooden shelves which are held up with industrial looking brackets. I always think this looks great. You can place cook books there, cups/bowls / pestle & mortar etc.

Great ideas thanks!

Love the rustic wooden shelves because they’re neutral as well. Will look into this.

Etsy have some good ones. Good luck!

Leave it blank or put a clock up. Unless you need the storage, don’t put up any shelves etc as they are dust and grease traps and a pain to clean.

We have a microwave in a wall cabinet (actually in our utility). It is a compromise - they're slightly smaller than other microwaves and built in ones are unaccountably expensive, plus I think a bit less safe than a counter top one. However it has been the right decision for us as it's freed up precious kitchen worktop. It's probably prompted me to teach the kids to make porridge and hot choc on the stove instead of microwave but that is no hardship.

Open shelves do look nice but for me, kitchens are about function and increasing the worktop is about the most bang you can get for your buck in a small kitchen.

If you like cleaning put up open shelves. If you don’t, dont.

pickingdaisies · 05/11/2020 22:58

I had an eye level microwave, I got burned when something spat out of the container onto my face as I was checking it. I would never have one higher than counter top again.

Officebox · 06/11/2020 00:43

@pickingdaisies wow! Thank you for the heads up. Hope you were ok afterwards?!

@Officebox I was lucky, I got caught just below my eyebrow and got my head straight under the kitchen tap. I ended up with a small blister which is now a little round scar. But it was so close to my eyes, and I nearly dropped the bowl as I was getting it out of the microwave when it spat. Makes me feel a bit sick when I think of it.

Murmurur · 06/11/2020 13:11

@pickingdaisies ouch! Glad your eye escaped. Certainly food for thought.

pickingdaisies · 06/11/2020 14:40

Thanks murmurur x

Officebox · 06/11/2020 16:35

@pickingdaisies gosh. Agreed that was a lucky escape! Thankfully you’re ok now x

Thanks office, the counter top microwave doesn't look so neat, but it is so much safer to use. It was cheaper, has more room inside and does more, too! Doesn't help with your wall space problem though! A magnetic chalkboard? Shelf for pasta jars? Or cookery books?

emmathedilemma · 06/11/2020 17:09

I really don't like wall mounted microwaves for the reasons outlined above. It's so much safer to have them at counter height with a surface to put things onto.

Cordillera · 06/11/2020 17:59

I like Smallgoon's shelves, just got one similar that's upcycled scaffold board and brackets, love it. From a timber social enterprise through Etsy.

For many years I had the Hylle from here

Loved it, used the scoops as normal little bits and bobs drawers. New kitchen means it's in the loft waiting for one of us to eBay it.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 06/11/2020 20:52

As PP said I would be careful about a high level microwave, we have one in our touring caravan and I am quite nervous about getting stuff out of it in case it spits.

Hanging pans is a good idea and as you would use them they won’t get a chance to get dirty and they would free up cupboard space

Officebox · 06/11/2020 21:24

@DownstairsMixUp and @WhentheDealGoesDown

What do you use to hang your pans? Have you got an image or link?

@Cordillera that looks very good too actually! Thanks!

Sorry, I don’t actually hang my pans, I just thought it was a good idea of DownstairsMixUp’s
