We have had a Bristan Solo toilet roll holder for 2 years and it is solid /no signs of rust

Do you have a mirror? The large one of this is nice up.

So you want chromed brass, which is the shiniest and most durable material.

There are also stainless steel versions, these usually come from China and, almost unbelievably, lots of Chinese stainless steel is very poor quality, and will either get patches of corrosion, or black pits.

European Stainless is usually 18/8 or 18/10 (percentages of chrome and nickel in the alloy) and Chinese is often 18/0.

Nickel is a relatively expensive alloy, so leaving it out cuts the cost and the quality.

We have had chrome ones for years and years. No rust anywhere. John Lewis have decent ones. Ours came from Bathstore. (Now defunct? Not sure). Other suppliers will have decent ones but don’t skimp. Buy the best chrome ones you can. Lots of the tap makers do them.

It seems to me that bathroom fittings now and within the last 4 to 5 years (even medium priced ones) don't last very long. Out taps started dripping badly as did dm's. (they've had to be replaced). The washers are not the same as the old ones, that could be replaced easily and cheaply, and cost more (of course) it pees me off.

I'm sorry I can't recommend any GOOD ones. We have given up on toilet roll holders. Just a cool unusual basket on the floor for the rolls!

We've got a chrome holder by the actual toilet but spares are in a basket.

if you want a tap with washers, made of chromed brass, you can buy one.

It will last about 94 years longer than a tap with ceramic cartridges.

I chose Bristan.

They will also sell you a ceramic tap if that's what you want.

Thanks Piglet I'll remember that.

Our 'new' towel holder just keeps falling away from the wall, the nails or whatever was used to 'fix' it have disappeared (the modern 'oldfashioned' look we bought was not well made).

The medium priced products are a waste of money, we should've spent more I suppose.

"towel holder just keeps falling away from the wall,"

probably an error in technique or material

usually a plasplug going into a plasterboard wall, but might be something else. Can almost certainly be fixed in a matter of minutes. Unless the wall is around a hundred years old or more.

Try Hansgrohe, Hudson Reed or Crosswater for loo roll holders. HR are brass with chrome finish. You know if they are decent if they are heavy.

ppeatfruit · 04/11/2020 08:55

The major part of the house is very old, 500 years or so Piglet ! But the towel rail is on an interior wall (most of the upstairs interior was rebuilt from a ruin in the 70s).

Presenting Thanks but we've given up on wall mounted loo roll holders, we use those 'stick' ones and baskets.

PresentingPercy · 04/11/2020 11:29

Was the op not wanting wall mounted? We have never had a wall mounted roll holder fall off the wall. I think your mounting is at fault.
