Windows and privacy

I live next to a walking path and my living room window looks directly out onto it. I like my privacy and so invested in net curtains. However I'm having problems with condensation and mold as a result (we have old wooden windows which I was hoping to replace prior to the second lockdown).

I would like to try something else instead but not sure what... Would appreciate some advice. I prefer all my windows to look the same from the outside, so the look will be carried through to all windows.

Shutters?

ChocoTrio · 03/11/2020 00:05

Have you considered shutters?

Mine offer privacy and light. They can be closed half way, so I can have bottom half closed for privacy and top half open for light.
The look really smart as well imo.

Not cheap and I had to wait 8 weeks for them as they are tailor made for your particular windows.

Maybe ask a local shutters and blinds company?

The other option might be tinted windows? You can get some sticky stuff for the windows that act one way for privacy.

Perhaps a controversial suggestion, but the cheapest option would be to add some frosted window film. I recently did this with one of my windows and I think the total cost was less than £15. Unlike blinds or net curtains, it doesn’t appear to have much of an effect on the amount of light that comes into the room.

My DH was a bit concerned that it might end up looking like a bathroom window 🙈 But you don’t have to add it to the whole window (see example). As long as the area that is at eye level is covered it will do the job. I used to live in a major European city where lots of houses/ flats had some kind of window frosting to stop people from looking in, usually in a band across the window, so I don’t really get bathroom vibes when I look at something like this 🙃

Get a dehumidifier

Silentnight87 · 03/11/2020 12:40

For every room? Ha. Hopefully get the window situation sorted soon

I don't like shutters as they take up too much light. Hopefully will find an alternative

Window film is great, I replaced my nets with it. You can get really nice patterns, and it doesn't have to be the privacy plain frosted option. I can still see out of mine.

Window film works well. I used it on my front door which opens straight onto the street.

You could try moving the nets away from the window pane.

Ultimately the bets aren't the issue here. The lack of ventilation and circulation is the issue.
Do you open the windows daily?
Have the heating on sufficiently?
Sounds like you need a dehumidifier and probably new windows.

Bets = nets

Keep the nets and add large trickle vents. Virtually free and in my experience highly effective.
