Two rooms or one big room

Recently purchased an relatively untouched Victorian house, do I keep the two rooms as small separate rooms so I can have a playroom and a living room or knock through to have one large room? Can't decide

We bought a house with the rooms knocked through on one side and not on the other. The big room is our living room - works well for socialising/social distancing (!) and is a lovely, light space but does tend to get covered in toys and is difficult to keep warm because it's the end of the terrace.

The other small front room is a cosy 'grown-up' room retaining original fireplace which I often think is wasted as DP's study...

We have 2 reception rooms in our house, but decided to knock theough and put double doors in.

The smaller side is now the kids play/tv room and the other side is the 'grown up' room.

We can of course have the doors open to make one larger space, or close them which works well for us.

Why not have the best of both worlds with something like internal French doors or bifold doors?? Open plan living when you want and shut any children out when you want GrinGrinWine

I think it depends on the size of the room. We lived in a small, extended two up-two down before buying our current home. We knocked through because both rooms were too small to really be practical, and the middle room was little more than a corridor, as the stair door, kitchen, lounge etc all opened off it. Had the rooms been bigger, and there been a separate hallway, I doubt we would have considered it.

I live in a 3 story Victorian terrace. Which is basically 2 rooms on each floor. Some people have knocked through and have one big room others like us have the 2. We font have children and I think actually the bigger room would be better. But I feel the 2 rooms is good for a play room and then more relaxed living room. Then when the kids are older it's more of a second living room or gaming room.

We decorated and carpeted before I had these thoughts and will move in a couple of years so we'll just leave it. I also think it might appeal to people with children too. So do think and decide before doing any decorating unlike us!

Look into tall radiators if you will be short of wall space.

Two from me, didn’t read his old your D.C. were, but a separate room for teenagers and their endless social gatherings is the best.

We have a very similar house and our predecessors knocked through between the middle room and the hallway. It works really well for us although we have no DC. We use the middle room as a dining room and it gets used every day.
