How much did your porch cost and is it worth it?

I'm considering getting a porch for extra storage for shoes and coats etc but wondering whether they are worth the cost? I've yet to get a quote but it seems the average price is around £5k where I live

I'm based in the Midlands so not looking at London prices. Is it worth the investment and are you glad you have one?

I can't help I'm afraid but watching with I terest as I'm considering the same. I'd love somewhere for storage

bellinisurge · 26/10/2020 10:44

Also shameless place mark because we are thinking of one too.

goisey · 26/10/2020 19:12

I haven't got a porch because I would just fill it with junk and it would depress me to have the messiness of coats and shoes to be the first thing I saw when I opened my front door.
I keep everything in the under-stairs cupboard where it's a nightmare, but at least it's hidden away!

JoJoSM2 · 27/10/2020 06:32

I think that most of them look awful so we removed one from the current property. 5k sounds enough to invest in rejigging a bit of layout/investing in clever storage to accommodate shoes and coats.

I had a quote from Anglican for a 3m square one and it was £15K Shock

Grimmauldface · 27/10/2020 08:39

Our front door opened straight into a tiny space with a door to the WC, a door to the living room, a door to the kitchen and the stairs. So no wall space to put so much as a coat hook. We had a 3m square porch added (max size without planning) and it's brilliant. Shoes, coats, bags and mud all stay out of the house. I'm very happy with it and it cost about 4.5k, 3 years ago (in the South). Although I don't think that included the cost of the new composite front door.

I would do it. We enclosed our porch and it’s the best thing we did. We used an oak frame though and it was mega expensive. It means you get better storage for everything else in the rest of the house. Make it as big as possible but make sure the house maintains kerb appeal! Not just a box.

Guymere · 27/10/2020 15:18

I should say that the porch is now part of the house. The front door is on the outside “wall” except that wall is glass. The porch area opens straight into the reception hall which is big. The whole area has lots of storage but still feels spacious.

DotTheCaddy · 27/10/2020 15:22

@Lsquiggles I know, I had to pick my jaw up from the floor! In the south west. Think they are just an overly expensive company though!

Lsquiggles · 27/10/2020 15:28

@guymere you've hit the nail on the head there! We don't have much curb appeal (mostly because our neighbours aren't very house proud and leave furniture in the garden making ours look crap too) and would like to put our own stamp on it, plus free up space throughout the house that is filled with shoes and coats currently. Somewhere to store the pushchair too would be great.

Looking to get a quote in the new year so I'll definitely report back... Hopefully with a quote less than 15k Blush

That’s a shame about your neighbours. We have a messy neighbour too but at least their mess doesn’t affect us but why people leave stuff lying about is beyond me. Having storage will improve your internal space too.

SparkyTheCat · 27/10/2020 18:53

I don't know how much our porch cost, because it was here when we moved in, but the extra space is certainly very useful and was a selling point for us. We have a shoe storage unit (Ikea I think?) which helps manage clutter and maximise the vertical as well as floor space.

goldierocks · 27/10/2020 19:54

Hi OP

I've got a Victorian house. Some of the other houses on my street have fitted porches over the years, there are lots of different styles. I wasn't keen on any of them.

In the end I got a carpenter to build me some sliding storage under the stairs. I've got a coat cupboard and a shoe cupboard, they hold loads. I'm pretty sure a buggy/pushchair would fit (coat rack above).

Would something like that be an option?

I don’t know how much it cost, as the previous owners built it, but I love our porch. We have dogs, and it makes it so much easier to come in and out, have visitors, get deliveries, etc without worrying about the dogs escaping or ambushing people.
I have a monks bench with storage in ours. So people can sit down to take boots on/off and we can stick messy things in there and out of sight.

Guymere · 28/10/2020 08:41

I have under stairs storage too. It’s not new space though is it? A new porch is new space. There’s precious little coat hanging under those stairs!

thetoughhaveleft · 28/10/2020 08:55

I wouldn't base much on a quote from Anglican. They once quoted me £3500 for a new front door!
